E38 v12 5,4 exhaust
Discussion
Hiya
For better sound I'd change the back box(es) - I'm sure the larger engined E38's have dual silencers?
I don't think the lambda sensors are in the rear boxes, and I'm sure the ECU will adapt and cope with any change in back pressure from changing them. I think it's when you change the complete system and headers etc that the ECU may need specialist tuning and parameter changes.
Also, whats your defininition of not spending too much?! the E39 M5 has a dual outlet system and quite a few UK based owners have the Hayward & Scott rear back boxes which sound very quiet on normal throttle, and sound fantastic on higher/full throttle! I think they'd come in at around £750-800 or so - but please check with them on their website.
If you want to go cheaper, then look at Longlife or Powerflow systems at a minimum. These places should be around the £250 ish fitted per back box and I suggest you talk to them to ensure you get the kind of sound you'd want prior to them fitting it.
cheers, Dennis!

Depending upon how much noise you want you could get these fitted easily. Alot of the Monaro guys have them and they work a treat....

Thanks guys, that's the route I'd like to go with.
I was worried about Lamda sensors and ECU, but you have answered those questions.
So am I better looking for an E39 in a breakers and using the rear boxes? Would that give the V12 the sound it deserves,it sounds very stifled at the moment.
I am new to BMW ownership and loving it (I'm a convert) and not sure what is possible to do to her without causing additional costs or long term damage, due to my lack of knowledge.
Many thanks again
Dave

Hiya
Using any BMW E39 back boxes or any OEM BMW exhaust system will NOT give your V12 the throaty, deep sound I suspect you want. You'll have to go aftermarket to get the sound increase/change that you want.
Keep looking around the various forums on the DIY or cutting out of OEM exhausts - commonly referred to as muffler/back box delete or 'straight through' pipes etc.
I guess you could do the DIY route after research, you may well find that it gives you the sound you want. If after doing that it doesn't sound good etc, you can then buy an after market specifically made system.
cheers, Dennis!

Hi Dennis, Nail on head, will go for DIY chop shop effort first off, and as you say aftermarket is then an option if I badger it completley.Using any BMW E39 back boxes or any OEM BMW exhaust system will NOT give your V12 the throaty, deep sound I suspect you want.
