Averaged this on the 90 mile return trip from Richmond to Poole last night after the MPH show in my 528 Auto! Granted driving at 60-65 all the way, but properly impressed all things considered, can anyone beat that in a petrol?

You sure the mpg computer isn't broke?!

Best I ever got in my manual 530i Sport was 36mpg on a similar run.

Fuel gauge seemed to agree, seen about 39 mpg on the same trip before, that was at 70 mph plus. Using Shell unleaded. It was pretty much as follows: leave car park, straight on till you get to Bournemouth, no traffic, one stop at Fleet.

I've seen 29mpg from an e39 M5 on a motorway run and I always get more from Shell fuel so why not?

My record is 39.9 mpg from Plymouth to Bristol a few months back. 530i Manual, 70mph cruise all the way.

I think I can just about beat it, although smaller car and less overall distance...
This is my record in a manual E46 330

The (nearly) 44mpg was over a approx 50mile journey from Fleet to Southampton at 55-65mph on the cruise control (I was very early for a work appointment so decided to see how economical the car could be).

I was ovbiously so impressed that I felt the need to take a picture! It very boring though & overtaking lorries took a lot of planning!

I managed 31mpg over around 3500 miles on my trip to europe over the summer (this included a few laps of the Nurburgring) which impressed me quite a lot.

My manual 6 cylinder BMWs all averaged around the 30mpg mark day to day.

I really wish I could find somebody as boring as me to explain what a 335i does under similar circumstances.

Stop torturing yourself and just buy the fecking thing! If you want to be sensible go and get a 318d - the fact that you're driving around in an ageing executive saloon with a large capacity engine would indicate you're not so don't fight it biggrin

ETA this thread is very relevant and the chap seems to have made up his mind to go for the 335i wink

Seemingly (and weirdly) just about all six cylinder BMW's since the dawn of time achieve roughly the same MPG figures. Please buy one and confirm wink
