E46 Timing Chain
Discussion
After my previous post on a problem I was having with my 318, I have had it diagnosed by a local independent.
He said the timing chain has 'jumped' and requires resetting and a gear changing as a precaution to stop it happening again.
He said the cost will be in the region of £350 for the repair due to the time it takes to carry out.
Any experience of this procedure and the quote I've had?
Thanks,

The info below applies to the Valavetronic 1.8/2.0 16v N42 engine
If your unlucky ifs a broken plastic timing chain guide, making the timing chain go slack
FIL had this happen at low speed, car stalled and would not restart
The guide its self is cheap enough (along with a new chain) BUT it requires the Cylinder head & sump to come off, so circa 10hrs labour (great bit of design!!), on a positive note, the values arn't normally damaged
Due to the valvetronic timing, I'd recommend its done at an experienced specialist of Main Dealer (requires special tools) at a MD your looking around £2K, Or around a £1k at a specialist.
