335i problems?
Discussion
Lots of people have problems with high pressure fuel pumps, a google search will turn up a few stories about them. Touch wood, never had a problem with mine. What year are you thinking about? The old engine, the N54, has been replaced with the N55 recently - don't know if this has sorted the HPFP problem though.

Thanks guys. I'm looking at a year 2007 which from what I can see has the problems.
Is it an expensive fix?
Have a read of http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=333... it's from an American site but should answer most questions. Not sure of the repair cost for cars out of warranty, but a lot of 335s are covered under the AUC (approved used car) warranty scheme - obviously you pay an annual cost to keep the car under warranty. Is it an expensive fix?

Are you talking about the HPFP prblem? If so then it affects all model years, its too early to tell if the latest 2011 model year N55 engines are OK. Its covered under warranty here in the US and BMW North America just issued a recall for a software update and modified pump after a class action lawsuit and bad press on ABC news.Is it an expensive fix?
The problem doesn't seem to exist to any great extent outside of North America for some reason. Here a high percentage of people seem to suffer multiple HPFP failures.

And from posts on 1addicts, the HPFP problem doesn't seemed to have gone away with the N55 engine either

Aftermarket (and quite aggressive) ECU tunes seem to be a lot more common in the USA as well, which may or may not be a factor in the demands on the HPFP. Certainley the recent 135i failure posted from a UK 135i owner was on a tuned N54 engine.

If you're looking at a 2007 car, be aware that the CO2 rating dropped during 2007; you'll need to check the specific vehicle but it's around the time the 57 plate came out (obviously cars could have been registered late, so make sure you check). The earlier cars fall into the Band L (£425) VED bracket, while the later cars are just under the Band K upper threshold so £245 p.a.
Thanks for the information guys. Good tip on the CO2. I'm going to have a look at one at the weekend hopefully.
I read a fair bit about possible turbo fails - anyone have any experience of this? This is a bit of a worry as it would be about 4K to replace I think I read somewhere) - anyone know how common is this?
thanks for any help.

I've been doing a lot of research into these of late and my conclusion so far is that you should buy one with a warranty and a low enough mileage that you can continue to maintain a good warranty throughout your ownership.
They are not reliable cars - the HPFP thing still isn't fixed, it seems. They just get replaced when they break. Some people have had 4-5!

That is a lot. 210kg of motors, metal and mechanisms!
Does it affect performance much?
Yes. Granted I had a salesman and my girlfriend in the car but I was underwhelmed by the performance of a 335i cab. It felt not a huge amount quicker than my 530i.Does it affect performance much?
When I got home and worked it that it was nearly 2 tonnes with 3 people in it and thus had a very similar power to weight ratio as said 530i, it all became a bit more clear.
