Hey guys,

I've only had a chance to do a telephone diagnoses at this stage, but it's seemingly likely that the headgasket has gone on the E38 740 I've given my sister. Obviously it's hard to tell without having seen it, but from what's described it's highly likely it's knackered.

Anyone else encoutered it? It's had it's fair share of coolant problems, from cracked rads to waterpumps, so I'm wondering if they've cooked it good and proper.

Much of a job to tackle? 280 odd quid for the headgasket kit seems pricey, but I've a feeling the labour is going to send that into insignificance!

Confirmed - HGF.

Both heads off, skim, pressure test, yadda yadda yadda. 1.5k ish, which equals a 740 in severe risk of going to the scrap heap in the sky.

Ouch frown

Is it the same engine as the X5, E39 etc? Might a replacement engine be an easier option?

If the rest of the car is sound then it's probably worth doing.. but any doubts and it might be easier to break it frown

That sucks big time. My e39 540 had a head gasket leak in one of the cylinders. Fortunately it was diagnosed early and the leak was small so I stuck in some of that ceramic liquid stuff into the coolant system, sealed the leak up and never had any problems since.

Sorry thats not much help on a total HGF.... I probably would have cried if a £1500 bill had come my way!

Hi, the 4.4 V8 will be an M62 engine and you are borderline on whether its worth doing. You can rent the specialist tools to do the job on ebay and save yourself a fortune but its not a small task.

Be aware that the 740i and 540i engines are not the same.

I couldn't tell you what exactly the differences are regarding bolting it up or what not, but a member who breaks e39's over on one of the 5 series forums apparently found out the hard way.

Personally i would have thought they were interchangeable or at least you could swap over a few easy bits like a sump etc etc but apparently not.

Unless someone has actually done the swap and confirms otherwise?

The camchain tensioners are different and there are differences between whether they have VANOS or not.

There are 2 main types of the 4.4i available, the 44 8 Series 1 and the 44 8 Series 2.

The series 1 was fitted to the 540 (1996-2003) and 740 from (1996-2002) and never to the X5.
The Series 2 was fitted to the 540 (1997-2003), 740 (1998-2002) and X5 (1999-2004)

All 4.0 V8's were the M60 engine (40 8S 1) and could NOT be fitted to an M62 car.

The S1 does not have VANOS, the S2 does. I see no reason that should you identify the original engine type, you cannot fit a like for like engine from any other model.

The S1 and S2 engines had the same power output but the S2 had more midrange pull.

If you scrap the old engine, I would be very interested in taking it off you for development work.

Apologies for the typo - indeed an M62.

Fingers crossed the block is sound, as it's getting 2 brand new heads, with a full set of brand new everything else lumped on top. If it goes again the car does too smile
