I've just bought a 2004 M3 convertible that has the integrated screen with sat nav, TV and telephone etc built in. I need a bit of PH advice on how to work it because a) I'm a bloke and can't read manuals and b) I don't want to break it by playing!!

1 - Anyone know how to upgrade the sat nav? There is a disc in the boot that appears to be the maps disc, but I don't know if changing this would give me new maps or, as Tom Tom seem to do, just give me a 'flashier' display and extra pictures of road signs etc? If this is the way of updating it, is there anywhere other than BMW direct to get one from?

2 - I have managed to sync the bluetooth with my phone (iPhone 3GS) and can phone out (by dialing on the handset though, naughty naughty!) but noone can appear to hear me when I talk. Any thoughts on if I'm just being a bit dim or is there something I'm missing?

Thanks in advance everyone!

Yes, changing the disc will give you new maps. The current disc is 2011 Europ High dvd which I have just bought for about £23 and it has 7 digit post code entry.
If you get the V32 software update you can also get the 3dperspective view.
Try a place called Eurosatnav. I have had my last three from there plus the update and all work fine.
On my 2005 330Ci my HTC phone syncs perfectly and transfers entire phonebook each time it connects and calls can be made/taken via the steering wheel controls.
I am sure others have synced the Iphone.
Hope that helps.

apparently you need to upgrade the bluetooth module. you'll find now and again it works fine as it is but it cuts out randomly and is bloody annoying!

There are essentially 2 parts to the beemer sat nav, there's the operating system and then there's the map information. The map disc is the one you find in the boot and as your car is an 04 it'll have the DVD unit so best to get latest DVD disc for europe which can be obtained from a number of places. The operating system however is what gives you the functionality etc to view the disc and this too can also be upgraded which can give you things like 5 digit postcode, night mode, perspective view, splash screen and camera's etc. For more info on this best vist the M3Cutters website at ethe following link and do some reading http://forums.m3cutters.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=2...

PS. Not heard of proper 7 digit postcode for E46 but would like to know more about it if someone has the info

I managed to sync my iPhone fine with my car which has the built in blue tooth. The phone contacts can be seen on the TV/Nav screen no problem and you can select via screen or steering wheel controls. In regards to hearing people then when talking you can up the volume via the steering wheel buttons but its still not the loadest TBH. Biggest issue I find with the standard beemer phone functionality is people seem to have more issues hearing me than vice/versa (quality rather than volume related).

As a side note its also possible to fit the E90 iPhone cradle in the E46 which i've done. Not cheap but worth it for me as it helps with signal and more importantly gives charging capabilities.

Hope that helps smile
