Do we have any X6 owners who'd like to give me an idea of how they have been handling in the recent snow?

My friend has an X6.

He was extremely surprised (and irriated) to inform me that it was "f@@cking shocking"

I know its been done to death but let me guess, big 20/21" alloys and low profile summer runflats.

Not a direct comparison but I have an X3 SD (essentially same drivetrain albeit less weight) and on 18" 235 section winters it's proven to be phenomenally good.

Like most cars with big fat tyres, utter crap on snow until fitted with winter tyres.

Several UK ones have been crashed in ski resorts as owners foolishly believe the 4x4/snow myth.

Glen McM on here has an X6 and bought winter tyres, if you're lucky he'll spot this and back this up.

Wasn't it on Top Gear that it didn't even work on wet grass?

They come on performance tyres, they weigh 2 and half tonnes, how do you think they will perform on mud and snow??

Change the tyres and they are awesome, try and drive them on summer performance tyres and they are lethal.

I wonder how a Range Rover manages then?

Well, Mrs Whoami's FFRR has exactly the same tyres as my mate's X6.

The X6 is useless (his description) while the RR is excellent.

They don't always if they've got the wrong tyres on.

Is the X6 an offroad 4x4 setup ie locking centre / rear diffs? what percentage of power can it send to each axle and each wheel?

Or is it a car like Haldex centre diff semi torque biassing arrangement?

My X5 is coming on narrower winter tyres.

I am highly sceptical of stories of RRs being fine on performance tyres, given stories from a Scottish friend of how his Defender fares on fat road tyres in Scotland on snow. He's switched it to narrower, off-road tyres to get around.

I think GP senior has these on his RR too.

He's been unstoppable this week.

My X5 4.4i is on wide performance 20" tyres and it is great in the snow. Driving and steering are very good with the only drawback being the weight of the car when braking. The DSC is fantastic and I have had no problems at all.

The X6 is not an offroader and it weighs 2.2t, it's designed to drive like a car, my X6 has 20" 315 section rear tyres so not really geared to the offroad and I do not expect or want my X6 to drive like a wallowy slow piss poor RR, suprisingly though it's actually been ok, I live at the top of a hill and got up no problems whilst at least 10 cars got stuck, all in all I'm happy with what it does and what it's designed for
