Hi all,

I am hoping you can help. Our car has started playing up and I need to get it fixed to visit the family over christmas \ new year.

It is a 2005 3.0L Diesel, 75,000 miles.

1. It idles and starts perfectly.
2. It develops a misfire (or equivalent in diesel) at 1500 - 3000 rpm in second gear.
3. It has a sort of flutter at higher speeds in any gear (barely noticible, but I know it is there)
4. it seems to do it more as the engine gets warm

I have tried the following.

1. Redex injector treatment
2. STP fuel dry treatment
3. Filled to the brim with new fuel as it was almost empty
4. run for 40 miles at high and low speeds
5. Connected a gunson fault code reader - no fault codes detected.

Although the car has been serviced regularly I can find no explicit record of the fuel filter having been changed, do you think a blocked \ partially blocked filter could cause the above symptoms?

I will probably change the filter tommorow or as soon as I can get a spare.

Any other suggestions to try.

Many thanks

Ok, I have changed the diesel filter and the problem still exists.

It is also missing in 3rd gear now between 1500 and 2500 rpm.

Any other ideas where to look?

I'm no expert but it does sound like a potential injector fault to me... do you have a good independent you could speak to, I used to get on well with mine and they could diagnose a lot of stuff in the course of a 10 minute phone chat.

I had very similar issues with our direct injection petrol BMW and it was the injectors - I'm not sure if the diesel engine is similar in that respect.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

I took it to a non BMW independent and he also could find no fault. He recommended a semi local BMW independent.

The BMW independent did have different software (Autologic) and he found 1 fault that might cause the problem even though he had never heard of it before.

Code: 54C8 Classification Resistor
Found on the Transfer Case.

I contacted the dealer to see if they could shed any light on it. (Not very helpfull) but I thought that since I now know that the fault happened on the transfer case it might be worth a look at the sensors on the case.

The BWM parts department looked at it on there system and found the following.

Part No: 27 10 7 557 345 Set, Classification Resistor.

It would be too coincedental not to be this so I have ordered one and it should be here tommorow/

I would consider myself good on car stuff, but I have to confess this one has me beat.

Can anyone explain to me how an actuator interacts with the transfer box. And what is its purpose.

This would help me to fit the symptoms I am experiencing with what is going wrong.

I have also posted this in case any one in future has similar problems.

Many Thanks

Hi All

I had the same with my 2.0L D X3 this year, I took it to a main dealer and one of the glow plugs (no2) was braking down, they replaced it and the problem went away, 3 weeks later it started again, so I took it back and they said that an other glow plug had failed (this time no4) so they replaced that one, and all has been well for the last 3 months. I did question them re it was happining when the engine was up to temp as I assumed the plugs would not be on, but the BMW diesel keep them on all the time. All I can say is thank god for warrenty! they paid without question.

I also had a glow plug gone but that was not the problem, I was told that it was only used for starting and once started it would make no difference.

The solution for me was to change the oil in the transfer box. I looked ok when I took the old stuff out but it was much cheaper than the alternatives, and it instantly fixed the problem.

It has not returned after 8000 miles.

It has to be from BMW as they do not publish the spec of it. From memory it was about 30 pounds and I think it took the whole bottle.

I did have a full engine diagnostic run and in my case it was not missing at all from plugs or any other reason.

I have already changed all the glow plugs as I was showing 2 x errors (4252 & 4262 from memory) which pointed to the glow plugs

How easy was it to change the transmission oil? DIY job or garage?

Many Thanks

Transfer box diy oil change is easy dont even need to jack it up I did mine. Get oil from BMW only. Theoretically the clutch pack adaptions should be reset which needs someone with the computer I didnt bother and it is smoother for sure and running great. If the car asks to have the oil changed then adaptions should be changed.
