So I just collected my 09 535d from my dealer and a coule of things have really annoyed me.

I asked why the passenger side mirror doesn't go down when I select reverse dispute the handbook stating that it should.

They tell me that the previous owner (BMW ex demo car!!!) must have deleted it as an option on the key, and that they car reinstall it so it works again, but will charge me £45

Unbelievable!!

Second, I'd asked them to update the software and the map (hdd i-drive) and tonight when collecting, they told me that I'd have to rebook the car in as it takes 2 days (WTF!!!) and that it costs £400!!!!!!!!!!!

So that's 3 x brand new Tom Toms for an updated map on a BMW.

My Merc driving neighbour, tells me that his maps always get updated as part of their standard service!!,

Think it'll be a Merc next.

Awful service, I can't recall a time which something hasnt caused me displeasure from when I lift my car from warranty work/service work, in the past year they have racked up 150+ miles in my car, used about 3 quarters of a fuel tank and damaged 2 of my alloy wheels, that is two separate dealers too, can't wait to get it moved on.. Audi next me thinks!

As said above, mirror is with memory seats option, and you have to make sure the wing mirror adjustment has to be towards the drivers side.

For latest maps just go to www.gpsunderground.com and have a read on there.

Yes, make sure the wind mirror switch is in the right position. I can't remember which it is, try all 3.

I got confused when i swapped keys, it stopped working but that was a red herring as i messed with the mirror switch.

Pretty sure the mirror is coded when the car has its PDI. A tech would need to programme it so therefore you have to pay. Whats the problem?

"Think it'll be a Merc next." You would buy a brand of car because they (anecdotally) update the maps on your sat nav?? Good luck with that.

Indeed - E39 was the same.

I can see why the OP is slightly cheesed off, if the car has the facility to have the auto dip on the rear view mirror i dont see what the big deal is to activate it, afterall the car is plugged into the computer as a part of the service, FWIW though i had the auto dip on my E46 M3, 118d and 330d, and hated it, the mirror dipped far too much for parralel parking, as i park and reverse using my mirrors and not looking over my shoulder it was a function i never used.

Updated satnav i cant comment on but £400 seems HORRENDOUSLY expensive, afterall the bmw systems arent that great and £400 to update to a slightly better not so great system doesnt exactly scream good value to me

Mercedes have only just started offering free updates of the nav, mine is a 56 plate with the HDD NTG2.5 system fitted and I have got to pay around £150 for updating the system and then £240 for the latest maps, so around the same price as BMW.

Regarding the mirror, you bought a used car, turning options on and off is free and part of the PDI with the customer, you can't moan that you will be charged to turn functions on/off that you want, someone has to sit there for 30 minutes and go through it all to do the work.

I got a quote to replace front and rear brake pads and change oil on my X5 from local BMW dealership and their quote (£800) included a charge of £30 to reset the service indicator. No thanks.

OK so an update....(i took the car to nearest bmw garage becuase of weather conditions at time and wanting tp avoid a 25 mile cross country run)

got the car back on thursday. i called wednesday - they said everything fine now. so arrived middle of thursday to collect. had to wait 20 minutes while my 'warranty bill' was worked out.

presented with bill for nearly 300 quid. (bear in mind I have fully comp extended warranty 100 quid excess.)

there was no problem with battery or electrics, one sat nav detector was bust so it was replaced.

I ask for explanation of the 200 quids worth of work ..... which I'm unsure that i shouyld be paying for as car was faulty and I have warranty.

so, this is it - I tell them about strage electrical clicking noise I've been getting...(see earlier and other post).... we'll they couldn't get that but they decided it would be fixed by 1. lubing the roof mechanisms in header rail (given that is direct above my head - i'd be pretty daft not to have noticed if that was where noise was coming from) 2. the two brace bars in engine compartment were re set and re tightened (WTF....) and they are charging me for time to drive car to see if they can find electrical noise.... but didn't

I get somewhat stroppy and say I'm not paying this.... go back through all my details they have recorded and ask where I reported mechanical noise that would make them investigated header and strut braces? desk person goes off to get service manager...

and we go though the whole episode again..... I point out that I'm suspect of their work in that they cannot even follow simple instructtions such as DO NOT WASH CAR - which I sigend against (this is because the last time I went to that garage they cuased significant cosmetic damage in washing that required them to do remedial work - i had run in with same service manager.)

so we have a stand off - i'm not paying for work that was unnecessary and I'm not paying for work where you don't /can't find the fault.

manager asks why I get car serviced at other garage 25 miles away.... i say politely it is becuase they tend to be competent not f^ckwits. that is why i'm surprised they think there was need to tt about with strut braces given car had an Isp II a while back.... he says we'll that garage is a differnet company.... I saw but its a main BMW as you are are you trying to tell me they do different things... now, then amazing thing... he says that if my perferreed garage is so good at servicing my car and given that I appear to be technically knowledgeable perhaps it is better I use them in future and don't come back.....he then slinks of to his desk makes some adjustments and ask me to settle the 100 warranty excess....

so, this gets me thinking.... a major main dealer who doesn't want business or only wants to numb brained un questioning owners who just pay whatever some 22 yr old girl on the services desk ask for with out a full technical explanation. bizarre...

so get in car and within 1/2 mile I hit a rutted but of road and 'click' the electrical sound is there... so much for roof mechanisms and strut brace work... my arse...

but that leaves me with the niggle .... is there an unhidden electrical gremlin.... maybe come xmas holidays I'll have to get the multimeter out and pull fuses one by one to see if I can see an anomolous current flows.... (the sort of think you'd have though the professional garage would have done)

main dealers eh.... cest la vie - we'll back to the one I trust ( fingers crossed they never drop me in it)

My 2nd back up Indy wanted £40 for engine and £40 for transmission for the updates, he has autologic.

My first indy would do it but isn't as confident in the electrics department at the moment.

I drive a Merc with navigation and that's absolutely not true. Mine had a fault from new and they wouldn't even update the maps as part of the fix - they had a special firmware only disc.

On the newer hard drive versions they there is an update subscription service but it ain't free, or part of the "standard service". They don't even connect the Star diagnostic system to the car as a matter of routine - as you allude in your post, it takes a considerable time (2 days is ridiculous though) to get it connected and sycn'd up.

Read the Merc forums - there's barely anyone on there (apart from a couple of plants) who is happy with the service they get from MB dealers.

If you get them to do the job then you're paying these costs whether it's itemised out, or just included in the total.

MB do the same - get them to change the pads & disks and the bill itemises out the time and cost of removing and refitting the wheels. But it cleverly only does it once so when they also changed some suspension bushes on my car that was cheaper as the wheels were already off.

Bear in mind for BMW, with the astonishingly cheap ServiceInclusive packages, the dealers have got to make up the shortfall in servicing revenue somehow. Those glass palaces don't pay for themselves!

I had a quote from two dealers to replace rear disks and pads on my (now sold) 07 535d both in excess of £600.

Munich Legends did the same work using the same parts for under £400.

Enough said.

+1 on that. yes

One of My work colleagues who owns a Mercedes and only goes to the Main Dealers for servicing is forever moaning about how they seem to treat him with contempt every time he goes there, like he's something they've stepped in on a pavement!. He thinks it's because he has one of the lower models in that particular range.

Despite this however he keeps buying Mercedes cars and going to them for servicing so I can only assume he really likes the cars.
