Error messages

I've got an error message coming up on the 1 series - the red inspection symbol has come up, owners manual just says take to dealer immediately.

Is there a way of accessing the fault codes through the car without a diagnostic tool? There is nothing obviously wrong, all services are up to date. I would just like to know if it is drive-able or if I should get it recovered. I'm sure I've read its possible just not sure how...
