I have a friend with a 2002 740 or 745, told he has sludge in engine and needs a repacement at ~£11k.

Any suggestions as to how much one from a breakers is likely to be? I am waiting for response from one at the moment.

Also what is a reasonable amonunt to expect for labour for fitting?

Thanks

Graham

I think I would want a little bit more information, sludge in engine so its going to cost X for new engine.I would suggest its taken to somone who can give a proper diagnosis. At that price it would be cheaper to scrap the car and buy another.

745s and 645s have been getting a lot of problems, can't remember what the base cause was but it's unfortunately not one their most reliable engines.

That does mean there will be a lot of other people looking for the same engine too.

What problems have the 645's been having? I think you will find most 645 owners here would disagree with your statement.

I looked into the 6 series a lot before buying mine and must agree, I've not heard of many engine failures.

The problems I have seen a couple of times were oil related, either loss of oil pressure or engine knocking.

Maybe these are in the 0.01% of failures but it stood out as the kind of problem I wouldn't expect.

I think you will find that was a problem with the earlier engine and related to oil pump bolts coming loose ISTR. The 645 had a revised engine I believe.

That's a thread I've just spotted regarding one of the engines regarding the knock, and another more unusual ticking that may sometimes occur.

Yes but did you read the conclusion? He stripped it down and found nothing. Your original post suggested engine failures!

You don't mention if it runs or has seized.

If it's just sludge can't they flush it, clean out the sump and top? After all, if the engine's already scrap there's very little to lose in trying.

He still has the problem, other links go to BMW replaced engines, piston slap and rod bearings.
Just because he didn't find anything doesn't prove there is no problem as it is still ticking away.

There will always be engine failures in all cars, your original post you said "745s and 645s have been getting a lot of problems". Nothing you have linked to really backs that up does it?

I'm just passing on what I have seen, you can always turn the stereo up and ignore it though.

Would get my vote. 'Sludge' doesn't sound terminal.

645Coup - Engine Tick- internal investigation didn't reveal a cause
Lewy_T - Engine Tick
davy_b - Engine Tick

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJ7ptk_1jmI - 545 engine tick video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHeizw6Jbn0 - another 545, bore wear scored cylinders

Amartins - engine knock E65 745 looking into new bearings
jamestallaght - 745 " i striped the engine and found that its one of the pistons is knocking under 2 thousand revs so i got an over sized piston for it.But it didnt make a difference.there is too much ware on the cylinder so i need to get an engine or one split for the bottom half."

jagu - 545i - new engine from BMW

cmoore_ - engine tick 545, 86k miles

Forbidden8701 - engine tick 545 64k

Jack-E61 - "My service detected demolations on the fourth cylinder and beginning grooves in the third. As to this result Munich gave allowance for swapping the whole engine. My Master Mechanics told me, that the detailed
research order for grooves in the right Cylinder bank from Munich is a proof for a well known problem on V8 engines. Therfore the free change of the engine without any discussions was no problem."

paulwbenn - "This sounds like the problem I had and described in a post a few weeks ago. The clatter noise was slight and at first I wasn't sure there was a problem - thought I was hearing things. On first visit to dealer, the visiting BMW tech couldn't hear it. It seemed to get worse and on the second visit, the dealership mechanic heard it. At BMW's instruction they replaced both heads and its definitely better, but I'm not sure its cured. Glad you got a new engine!"

gwf545 - I recently noticed that my 09/2004 build 545 has a slight ticking sound just after starting but only while cold. It goes away once the white tach limit warning bug moves to normal. It sounds like a single valve/lifter is little loose or sloppy.

Whether you agree or not, I think it would now be gracious, given he's put some effort into supporting his claims, to give him a break.

Well the reason for my tenacity on this was the statement regarding the quantity and reliability of these engines having issues, I consider this site one of the best to get information and think that people should maybe be a bit more accurate with statements.
