e46 blower fan / final stage resister issue
Discussion
hi all,
have done some reading but just after some confirmation
2002 e46 330ci m sport.
On starting up, the cabin blower is stuttery in its power, for a few minutes until it settles and blows consistently.
In addition, the fan makes a whistling, rattling noise (cricket!?). This stops completely when the blower/Climate control unit is turned off, so im sure it is a squeak from a fan/blower. It has started since its been cold, whether or not this is a co-incidence i dont know.
my question is, given the stutttering on startup, and the squeak, am i better replcaing the resistor or the blower?
secondly, what are the best parts to go for in terms of reliablity and cost!
cheers all

Main symptom when mine went was the fan speed varying, usually ended up blowing full tilt even when set at the minimum. The hedgehog(FSR) can have a variety of effects on it's way out but I'm not so sure with the noise though. Is it only in the first couple minutes you have the problem? Only asking as my FSR only gave problems once the car was warmed up a bit.
If you replace the FSR I got my part from the dealer for around £50 IIRC, not sure what the other alternatives are like for reliability. Just make sure they have the better heatsink design as the original 12/13 big pins caused the problem with the part. Updated has around 30 smaller pins.
Takes about 1hr if you DIY it although access can be tricky if your a big lad.
