Before you start stripping down your engine it might be worth while making sure your cooling system is bled properly. These engines sometimes get airlocks which can be hard to remove.

Guys Thanks for the reply.

What is the best way to bleed the coolant.

I take it you did not bleed the system after replacing the hose? The bleed valve is the round slotted thing about 12mm across situated on the top tank of the radiator on the passenger side. You need to undo it carefully until water issues forth from the small bleed hole in it,the engine must be running whilst you do this. Be prepared for steam so be careful to avoid scalds.
The technique is similar to bleeding a central heating radiator

eta its probably not a good idea to run your engine in the red for very long, and also when bleeding i read on the 'net (so not sure if its BS) that it helps on the E36 if you raise the front slightly.

definitely, DEFINITELY take the water pump out and check it. quite often they have plastic blades on the inside which become brittle with age and finally give out. if it's a metal impeller (internal blades) pump you'll be ok, but you must check this or you'll cook the car. it's very common on these.

You really need to find out why your top hose burst in the first place, the three things that spring to mind are:
1) thermostat stuck
2) waterpump vanes broken
3) head gasket failure
The first two are relatively easy to check and rectify and the parts not too dear.
P.S. I had this happen to my 328i auto except the radiator/header tank split. It was caused by the failure of the electric auxilliary fan along with a weak viscous fan,but this happened in July whilst driving enthusiasticaly. It may be worthwhile checking the fans both work.

To bleed properly.

1.If possible elevate the front of the car as much as poss (jack or whatever-this just meakes the process quicker, but not compulsary)
2.Switch ignition on.
3.Put heating temp on to full, fan on low.
4.Remove expansion tank cap and bleed screw thats next to it.
5.Pour pre mixed anti freeze into the expansion tank, up to the very top, until water starts coming out of the bleed valve.
6.Initially it will be air bubbles and water, but keep pouring VERY slowly until water runs out with no air bubbles.
7.It will take a while, and you will waste some anti freeze as you need to keep pouring it in the expansion tank until its right up to the lip, but it really is the only way to ensure proper bleeding.

Do not use the engine running method-it creates loads of steam so you cant tell when all the air is out (plus the water boils quickly when the system is not pressurised).

replace thermostat, they're pence. then take out water pump and check the innards aren't broken.

I have a 2001 bmw 316se.1.8

Temp went to red and car started smoking from the engine. Waited for it too cool down and no water in the expansion tank. A little mayo style gunge on the oil cap. I filled up with water but then after a couple of miles no water again as my the display on my dash came up to confirm this plus went back into the red again.

When there is water in the bottle, you can hear the water bubbling. Any help would be appreciated. I was told by the garage the head gasket was fine and the mayo was just condensation. They said it was something to do with the air pressure.

hmm, not sure about that one but something that can happen is there being a small crack in any expansion tank plastics. not apparent visually but under pressure you'd lose coolant and create steam. the e36 ones often did this too.
