This morning, I discovered that my alarm can no longer be de-activated by the fob. The battery in the fob seems OK (strong, constant red light when holding it down). I don't have a working spare (I do have a spare fob but have not got around to getting it reprogrammed for the car).

It's a 1997 E36 328i with what appears to be the standard BMW alarm (fob has 2 buttons, white and red and a missing corner). I've not long had the car and the weather has been crap so I've not had much of a chance to poke around yet.

I've not opened the car yet, but I think it's safe to assume the alarm will go off as soon as I do, so I need a way of de-activating it and resolving the problem. It was working just fine the other day so I don't understand how all of a sudden it's working itself, but oh well. So if anyone can tell me the best way to solve this problem, then I'd be extremely grateful (PM/email me if you don't wish to say publicly).

Cheers, I've emailed you back.

It looks as though I need to reprogram the fob but it looks as though I can only do that if the alarm is deactivated; to do this I need a secret code, which I also don't have, so it looks like I'm knackered. Just removing it is looking like the best option to me now (or disconnecting it).

Hello Mate
I thought that if you unlocked the car using the key in the door lock and they alarm went off, all you had to do was put the key in the ignition , turn it to the energized position and the car would regonise the key and the alarm would switch off.
I may be really, really wrong, hope not

That's certainly the case with the later type fobs, but I guess assumes the fob is still in good shape for the car to recognise it. I had an issue last year with my 2007 E61 where it turned out that the remote signal receiver in the car had packed up and car would not unlock or disarm with fob. Maybe that is the issue with yours and fob itself is OK? I could unlock car with key, alarm went off when door opened, but stopped as soon as fob went into ignition.

That could indeed well be the case (I hope!) - I've not tried yet as I've been at work and not had time, and don't particularly wish to wake the street at 7 am risking the alarm not turning off. I really hope you are right. I'm going to have a look at the weekend, whether this actually de-activates the alarm though I'm not sure...

I've mailed you back with a copy of the guide, it does talk about using the 'secret code' so might help you.
If you need to get round it, the guide describes where the unit is, you can just unplug it and the car will still run as normal, just means you have no alarm or remote locking so everything runs off the key, central locking will still work off the key, not sure about the immobiliser.

Hi mate, those are indeed the same instructions I found, however, if all I need to do is disconnect the control unit in the glovebox I will likely just do that for now smile

Thread resurrection but I have the same exact issue with my 97 E36 M3. Does anyone know how to sort this? I had to drive it home last night with the alarm and hazards for the first few minutes and I look dodgy at the best of times!
