2.5TD injector troubles
Discussion
Hi, bit of a convoluted post but it is relevant I assure you..
My grandfather drives an older (r-reg I think) Range Rover with the BMW 2.5 TD engine. Apologies as I do not know the engine code.
Recently the car has been cutting out in traffic, when diagnosed yesterday the garage came to the conclusion that the injectors are failing and must be replaced at a cost of £2500 + labour.
Does this sound right to you? Are the parts really that expensive?
The reason I ask is that my grandfather isn't the most well heeled of gentlemen in his retirement and a repair cost of this degree is going to force him to change his car. Seeing as this car is what he bought for himself at retirement, I would rather not see this happen, as I am sure you can imagine. Plus these numbers seem a little expensive anyway, although I'm not particularly well versed in the mechanics of BMW diesels.
Any thoughts and advice greatly appreciated, more information available at request. Cheers

Off the top of my head, and without any more info, i'd be AMAZED if it was the injectors causing a full cut out! Worn injectors tend to hamper starting, and make the vehicle smoke a bit, but generally once it's going, they have to be catastrophicly knackered to actually stop the engine (esp on a 6 cylinder engine!)
(a DIY injector "leakback" test is easy to do yourself with a bit of plastic pipe and a jamjar - google it)

Thanks for that, greatly appreciated!
It is occasionally a bit of a pig to start but it seems more of a voltage problem. Once it has a battery booster pack on it it starts first time.
The vehicle doesn't smoke at all from what I have seen, but I haven't really spent much time behind it whilst it is running so it may be a little smokey once it gets going.
Also, when it does stall/ stop running, it stops very smoothly, even more so than if the key was turned to off. It is strange as it cuts out seemingly at random when the engine is between idle and light load. About a week ago when pulling out of the petrol station, the revs raised, the gearbox started to engage, moved the car forward slightly and then it just went. No warning at all.
It wouldn't be so bad but I just dont have an understanding of diesels or automatics.

I was having the early symtoms of this on my last 325tds (same M51D25 engine) and had my injectors refurbished by these lot:

Only cost £150 and they even lent me the special socket to remove the one injector with the wire on it.
