Need to change e53 X5 4.4: go for e70 40d or 50i?
Discussion
I've been very happy with the 4.4 v8 (2004), but it's time to change to a 7 seater.
Has anyone made the move from the 4.4 v8 to the new 40d or 50i? I'd like to hear your views/experiences re: power, handling, ride comfort, fuel economy etc. I'd also welcome views of other owners of a 40d or 50i!
How does the 40d or 50i compare to the e53 4.4 power-wise? Is there noticeable lag in either?
What's the real world MPG on the 40d and 50i? I'm very tempted by the 50i, but if the fuel consumption is going to be much worse than the e53 4.4 v8 I'll get it in the neck from the wife as she uses it during the week (she gets an average of about 17.1 mpg when doing town driving only and 20 when doing mixed motorway/town driving).
Thanks!

I can't really compare with the E53 4.4i or the E70 40d, but my month old X5 50i certainly uses less fuel than my M5 (not much of a recommendation, I know).
The 50i will never be a sensible choice. It cost more, uses more fuel and will be harder to move on. It is as much fun as a car this size can be though. The 50i does not have noticeable lag. Power is instantly available and in abundance. It never feels slow, even though I'm used to quick cars. The gearbox is the best auto I've ever used. I almost never find myself complaining at it for shifting or not shifting, the way I usually do with autos.
Doh! I didn't even check the name of the poster when I saw the title. We've already talked about this.

We have a 35d E70 and to be fair the fuel consumption is average at best I'd say. Missus uses it for shortish journeys - overall it returns around 22-23 MPG. On a run it'll get close to 30.
I'd say a petrol could be perhaps 18 and 22 respectively so perhaps not a big a difference as you might think.
For a big lump performance is surprisingly good. Doesn't feel as quick as the speedo says it is.

Thanks for the replies. We've just had the 4.4 repaired again (I've literally lost count of the number of visits I've had to BMW in the past year) - so the wife is keen to keep it for a little longer and get the 7 seater later this year or beginning of next. Zod: in view of your thumbs up to the 50i, I'm convinced that's what we'll be getting.
