What kind of MPG are you getting for city driving from your 6-cylinder petrol beemers?

I am getting 16-17mpg which seems really bad. Anyone else around this figure?

Sounds low. I'm getting around 23-24mpg from my E46 330i (auto) in the winter.

I actually think 16-17 mpg is believable. My trip computer says 31mpg but that's because it's still influenced by motorway driving I've done recently. From what I can tell from the on the spot economy gauge, an average of 16-17 in traffic/urban wouldn't surprise. Mine's a 328i manual

Depends on the car.

I used to get around 16-19 from my E39 528i se auto, however, would see around 29 round town from the latest 272bhp 330i auto.

Not all six cylinders are the same and the game moves on.

Mine is a 325ti automatic.

It says 22-23mpg but thats taking into account long stretches of A-roads. I reset the computer and its only giving me 16-17mpg with an average speed of 21mph. Its had a recent service as well so can't be lack of care.

Reading the thread below I'm wondering if changing to a oil burner would be worth it....

An auto is a bit more thirsty than a manual, but your figures sound about right to be honest.

The 535i I've just bought saved me over 2 grand over an equivalent diesel.

That 2 grand will pay for approx 2.5 years of commuting to work and back with it's average 23 MPG.

MPG 'in town'...

Too many variables I reckon as 'in town' means different things to different folks.

Travel 5 miles in 1.5 hour nose-to-tail London rush hour traffic with the occasional burst of throttle to find the gaps at roundabouts and all of your aircon / gadgets on and I doubt any car will get more than 10mpg.

Waft along steadily for 5 miles at 30mph and most cars will get well above 25mpg.

Both of the above would be classed as 'in town' I suspect and the relaities will lay somewhere inbetween the two scenarios. But it's a very hard one to measure consistantly, very subjective.

I guess you mean the commute *to* and *from* work as you posted it twice biggrin

My commute takes 10~15 minutes, 10 miles, 5 on dual carriageway at 60 to 80mph and the rest on MK town roads at 60mph. (but MK does have an infinite number of roundabouts!)

Well inner city/town driving there is rarely an opportunity to go 30mph for 5 miles constantly. I'm talking about town centre driving where there are pedestrian crossings, traffic lights, ocassional bursts of clear road, light/medium traffic.
