Water leak & over heating on idle
Discussion
Hello,
After spending time fixing rear diff & rear wheel bearing, then a starter motor
im close to giving up on my 1996 bmw 316.
Just another problem has come up
The car overheats when idling, then water leaks from a hose at the back of the engine.
Im going to try and tighten the hose, the top & bottom hose change when running, so I think the t-stat is opening and working correct. Can not test the water pump.
The car still idles and drives fine despite this, another issue is just when this problem started the car can get no heat inside. I can hear the heater valve clicking, could this be faulty ? is it common problem ? the hose that leaks is connected to the valve, so could be extra pressure due to running closed loop system.
Could a sticking heater valve cause this ? or not really ? ive tried tapping the valve with hammer, but still will not open, ive removed the plug connector, but system defaults cold
Could I remove and clean ? or replace ? or could be a different issue ?
Spark plugs are all clean, so i dont think its head gasket, and the car starts to easily, other headgaskets cars ive seen struggle to fire, esp when warm.
Sorry for long post and thanks for any help. Dont know to fix, take to garage or scrap
hmmm not great

I'm not an expert but I would guess that if the hose was not on tight then the pressure cannot build up to it's normal level and so it'll boil at a lower temperature and also the pressure that can build up will force the water out.
Tighten the hose up? Replace it with one from a scrappy if tightening it up doesn't work?
Quite easy to check the thermostat - start engine up from cold. The top hose from rad should remain cold for a few mins until thermostat opens and then it should get warm > hot.
Also the hoses should become "firm" as the pressure builds up.
I know some BMs suffer from dodgy water pumps (?) but even if it is this, replacing it with one from a scrap yard shouldn't be too hard (and old fashioned scrap years are the best way to find out how to remove the bits you want without damage before you have a go on your own car!!
