Anyone seen this? http://germancarscene.com/2011/01/19/bmw-adds-x1-x...

Engine sounds ok with 245bhp, pretty decent for a 4-cylinder, but how confusing is the badging if 28i now means 2.0 turbo! Wonder if it will make its way to the rest of the BMW range.

It already has: 50i = 4.4 twin turbo, 40d = 3.0d (twin?) turbo, 335i = 3.0 twin turbo and many more examples.

They are going on equivalent power output from a n/a (non-M) engine. It's not really new. In the 80s, there was a 745i (not available in the UK) whcih had a turbocharged 3.5 six, deemed equivalent to a 4.5 litre n/a engine.

Yeah I realise the badging hasn't corresponded to the engine capacity for years, I was explaining it to someone else the other day, but this is taking things to new levels! Usually there isn't more than 500cc between the badge and actual capacity. Calling a 2.0 a 28i is super confusing considering the 25d is a 3.0 and 23i a 2.5/3.0 etc.

Edit: But the 528i is a 3.0!

To give them their due though, thpower outputs from these engines are remarkable, the 520d putting out 184 bhp and the 523i 204 bhp. What's the output of this 520i? Similar to the 520d?

It's snapping at the heels of the E39 528i.

True. The 20i (2.0 I4) engine is 170bhp but its not used in the 5-series (at least not in the UK).

Qué?
There already is a X1 xDrive28i with the normal N52 straight six. So is going to replace or what?

Yep, according to Autocar this week it will replace the 28i later this year.
We dont get the X1 in petrol form in the UK, but I would figure this engine
will replace the Z4 23i, 523i and 528i at some point.
The badge policy will help avoid alienating anyone buying a 6 cylinder.
As we pay so much more for a 6 cyl over a 4 pot, do you think BMW will
reduce the price....
