Hi peeps,

Having trouble deciding on what to take (going from an E46 M3 it's going to be pretty nasty either way)!!!

Options are going to be pretty minimal either way, just going to get Harmon Kardon, Sat Nav and hopefully the 18's if I get the Msport.

I much prefer the looks of the Msport but the ED has more power! I will probably get either re-mapped if I can find one that's not detectable or can be removed for servicing... Don't think I will be allowed to get the sports seats if I get the ED so that is another downside to getting the ED - but he has more power!

I only do about 15k a year and only 2k or so of that will be business use.

Any views welcome!!!

Cheers
Jon

Do you need the room of the 3er? The 123d is lots of fun with low CO2 emissions too.

I came from a Z4M Roadster to a 320d coupe auto (177bhp) ... and 7 months in I still love it.

318d / 320ED ... Same engine .... effectively. Different tune.

I have driven a 318d and own, as I say, a 320d ... both 58 plate.

The 318d was very similar indeed to my 320d ... but with no bite at all. I would suggest the 320ed would be the better bet ... but try driving both - I was surprised at how similar the 318d and 320d were. Both rode Ok .... but the M Sport was more prone to jumping about a bit.

Alpina D3, or is that out of budget?

123d unfortunately isn't on my car list otherwise it'd be no1 choice, maybe behind the D3 though wink

Guess I should drive both options anyway...

The D3 is lush. It was very expensive on my scene, though, for some reason.

Right, I have been thinking.

The 320ed is 163bhp and 109g of CO2.

The 318d is 143bhp and 119g of CO2.

Both the 318d and non-ED 320d remap well, and I can't see the 320ed being any different -although I couldn't find any remaps for the ED after a quick search.

That means the 320ed may be potentially cheaper each month, but with more power both before and after a remap.

However, I am pretty sure the ED only comes in one trim level and has some low drag wheels which don't look the best.

If I had something else for the weekend then I'd pick the 320ED. If it was my only car then the 318 M Sport and remap it. Obviously drive both though as I didn't like the ride on the 3 series M Sport with 18's

I asked the same question a few months back and plumped for the 318d m sport. Ordered in November with a jan or feb expected delivery but now advised may!

I'd plump for the 320ed, having said that I've never been as fussed on looks.

If you spend alot of time on B roads personally I think the Msport is to be avoided, too hard and skittish for my liking on the couple of examples I've driven.

Can you take cash 4 car instead and then if you want continue to run your e46 m3 or anything you choose to buy.

I opt out and essentially I get a 330d msport auto leather sat nav pro and lots of other options for the same cost as getting a golf gt tdi 140 or 318d es on co car scheme.
I would get quite a bit better mpg from the co cars but I want more power and at the end of 4 years which I'd have to run a co car I get to keep my 330d

I went for the 320d ED as my company car back in October. Personally I'm not a fan of either the looks or the ride of the Msport anyway, so it was an easy choice for me. I think squishy high profile tyres have saved the wheels in some of these crater size pot holes too wink

As for the 320d ED it has been great, returning about 60mpg over the past 4,500 miles and very relaxing on a motorway cruise. Will easily do high 60's mpg on a, legal, long run. Although the wheels are only 16 inch they don't look as bad as you might imagine as the suspension has been lowered by 15mm, so the arches are full.

As you say, best to get a test drive of both.

A real world 60+ mpg is very impressive far a fairly responsive car. I had assumed the figure wasn't really possible.

I'd second that a real world average of 60mpg when it's still running in is highly impressive.

How does that work then . . . is your company's cash option figure ridiculously high ?

I'm in exactly the same situation as my 118d M-Sport goes back in July and the 320ED seems to be the popular choice amongst my counterparts.

If I can have sat nav on the ED then I'll probably go for that. If not, then it'll be the M-Sport 318d.

The ED is an engineering masterpiece considering the power : emmissions : tax : spec ratios. It's probably the more sensible choice.

Opted out and bought a 3 year old 330d instead of a hyper Eco model that the fleet co cars are limited to due to Corp responsibility etc.
