E90 - DE-CHROMMING
Discussion
Hiya
The most popular mention on forums of how to do this would be to source a set of oem black trims and swap it all over. This is usually touted by those who say for BMW's that anything changed 'must be OEM or not at all'. This method is fine of course, just be prepared to wait for a good condition set to turn up and the high price for them and then of course, budget for someone to do the actual swap over without breaking anything. If you can do it yourself all the better!
Next option is to take the car to a good paint shop to have them mask the car off and paint the trims. Time consuming like above, relatively expensive too.
Next would be a DIY attempt with either the specialist de-chrome tape or some Plasti-dip. Plasti-dip has the advantage that if you get something wrong, after it sets, you can peel it off!
My favoured solution and one that often is overlooked is to go to a reputable vinyl wrap company. I had my E39 Touring done this way just over 2 years ago. 35 minutes, zero mess, no hassles and job done. I opted for a gloss black vinyl to emulate the M5 de-chrome and also had the pillar covers done as well as the inside top strip on the door card. Around £80-100. In the time I've had it, no issues at all, no peeling or cracking, those I've mentioned it to look surprised and move in for a much closer look !
Cheers, Dennis!
