I've been having a (purely speculative at the moment) look for an E92 335d Sport coupe as the OH and I both like them and might start seriously thinking of getting one at some point, but there doesn't seem to be any for sale on the used market. Are they very rare or simply so good that noone wants to part with theirs? There are a few 330ds around so I'm wondering, in the real world, how much less good is a 330d? Would we be simply better off settling for one if a 335d proves too hard to find or is it definitely a case of "hold out for a 335d 'cause they're miles better?"

ETA: Only interested in manuals. There are some autos out there.

The 335d is auto only so if you want a manual I'm afraid you'll have to look at something else; 330d is available as a 6 speed manual though!

However, if you want a diesel I'd actually say an auto was the better option as it keeps the engine in the (relatively) narrow power band; you don't drive a diesel in the same way as a petrol and personally I think the auto suits the characteristics of the diesel engine a bit better. Probably a bit of a disbenefit on economy but if that's the main criteria guess you might as well get a 320d!

They are valued at several thousand quid above even a 335i. Not sure I see the point really - the 330d is more economical, the 335i is faster, the 330i is as economical and barely any slower.

They're not economical enough over a 335i to justify the price premium.
The only justification is if you prefer the diesel, which some people do.

Thanks - I didn't realise the 335d was auto-only. That explains why I couldn't find a manual one! 330d it is then! I'm sure the auto is good, but I love the interaction of a manual too much to drive anything else.

I agree with the positive comments on the sound of BMW's 6 cylinder diesel. I was in Germany with the OH and a couple of friends just over a week ago and we maxed an E91 325d Touring on the Autobahn - the sound was awesome biggrin

I consider 10mpg difference quite significant, especially given the way fuel prices are going (combined 335d - 38, 335i - 30).

Also, the 335i is more expensive to tax (£400 against £235)

Second hand the prices are nigh on the same.

If you do 12,000 miles a year, the diesel will save you ~£400 in fuel and £165 in tax = £565.

But, at the end of the day, it's all down to personal preference.

Thats 8mpg.

Not strictly true - only the pre Sep 07 335i's are £445 to tax (And nothing is £400, where did that figure come from?). The 57 plate onwards 335i's are £245, same as a 335d.

Absolutely not - the 335d is more expensive. It's valued at several grand over a 335i in this months Glass's Guide for example. There are the odd 335d M Sport popping up under £20k but they are very much the exception not the rule.

As I've shown the tax difference is really £0. Leaving just 400 quid in fuel. In the context of a car which costs £20,000 to buy, £500 for a warranty and a staggering £1100 for a set of 4 tyres on the 19 inch wheels the fuel economy saving is a drop in the ocean really!

My mistake - too early in the morning for difficult maths like 38 - 30.....and you're right, I was looking at the first year tax.

As for second hand prices (BMW UA, same year, same spec)

335i SE, 37k, £19995
335d SE, 39k, £19995

335i SE, 30k, £18250
335d SE, 30k, £17995

not much difference there.

Why are you quoting SE prices when it is quite clear from the title he is after an M Sport?

Lets look at AUC M Sport pricing shall we?

2007/07 40k mile 335i M Sport: 18550
2007/07 30k mile 335i M Sport: 18995
2007/57 23k mile 335i M Sport: 18995
2007/57 23k mile 335d M Sport: 22995

Hmm... infact the cheapest possible 335d M Sport AUC is £23k.

Dont forget though that the 335d will be worth more come resale time. Also, better economy when you have it too.

As time goes on the demand for big engined petrol cars is dropping. Worth bearing that in mind too.

Having said that, as always, i'd drive both, weigh up the differences in economy, then buy which one suited best.

If that's the case, then that means the d retains more value - new the d is only £2000 more than the i (£41,170 vs. £39,125), and from those figures it's now £4000 more.

I guess it depends how long you keep it. I've been trying to plot estimated residuals for these to give a total cost of ownership for each of the decent models in the range to aid with my choice in next car.

Paying more for the 335d doesnt seem likely to return the difference at resale time - though that said I plan to keep the car for 5 years.

Whats an 8 year old 3 Series worth? Nothing pretty much - so it wont be worth £4k more in 5 years time.

Comparing something like a 330Cd on an 04 with a 330Ci on an 04 reveals a difference of about £1k at trade book.

If you can prove me wrong I'd be delighted as my TCO costs will reduce!

My usual approach is to ignore depreciation - it's something I can't really do anything about, so I just get a car I like and that's the end of it.

If you hang on a bit you will find the right 335d.

I waited for about 3 or 4 months before finding the right one. An excellent spec, low mileage coupe which was a great price. Private sale, the guy needed the cash and had finance to pay. Overall i'm fairly sure it was cheaper than some 335i's at the time but with a £200/pa road tax and better fuel consumption.

At the time i was looking for a sensible car to keep me interested whilst setting up new businesses. I needed to be sensible and keep costs reasonable. The 335d returns 42mpg over a tank on my commutes, £200 PA road tax. But its still a rapid car, great drive, a brilliant all rounder.

On the downside, its power is effortless making even the most incapable driver quick and it's diesel so sounds nowhere near as nice or as fast as the 335i. So you either take the 335i and get around 23mpg and £405 pa tax and the lovely noise and higher rpm. The 335i does also have it's fair share of issues HPFP, injectors, coil packs all common problems. The latest ED 330i in manual is a beautiful drive, the best non M engine BMW make.

It was my time to be sensible, but this year i will be looking at an m3 and i must admit i've even been looking at GTR's.

EVO magazine got 28.2mpg average over 25500 miles on 'their' 335i Touring long termer a couple years back and CAR magazine averaged 24.2 over 10 months on the heavier covertible they ran.

In my experience they are thirsty on short stop start runs around town at this time of year but are good, considering their pace, on motorway runs when everythings up to temperature i.e. 32~33mpg. Mine is an older pre Efficient Dynamics too.

Are you seriously suggsting that in similar driving conditions a 335d is 19mpg better than a 335i?!

In reality I suspect the difference would be at best half that; I get 25mpg out of my E46 M3 and I'd expect a 335i to better that quite easily (the combined figures of the two cars suggest even the pre-ED models are around 6mpg better than an M3). Also, only the pre-ED cars fall into the £400+ tax bracket; the post 2007 cars are still more than a 335d but again I think the difference is much less than you imply!

Not out to rubbish the 335d (it's a very competent machine) but let's have a bit of balance!

From what I can tell the ED 335i will deliver similar economy to an older E39/E46 x30i.

Low 20's in town, low to mid 30's on the Motorway depending on how heavy your foot is.

Yes fair play i undersold the 335i

The 330i ED auto did 32mpg combined which was very impressive. The 335i figure was a rough guess but in reality i think it will do high 20's (27-28) combined and easily 30 + on the m-way.

Low 20's is more like a town figure. Don't know why i didn't put more thought into it.

As I was looking for a manual I don't think that'll be possible - They don't do them with a manual 'box as I've now discovered. That does explain why I was having so much difficulty finding one! I'll stick to looking at 330ds, though they're pretty scarce too.

I know, didn't mean with regards to a manual, i was referring to the right spec at the right price.
