Changing From Runflats on a 2007 5 series?
Discussion
Apologies if this has been asked a million times, one of my neighbours has just got a 2007 525 sport and the ride quality is driving him insane.
He wants to know will changing to non run flats help the ride quality enough to justify the cost and are there any issues with the tyre pressure system when changing tyre types?

No issues at all with the pressure sensor, it still works on the same principal - rolling diameter of the wheel.
People who change to non RF's do report a significant improvement in all departments, handling, feel and comfort. You can buy a space saver kit to fit in the boot from ebay.
I shall be doing this very soon. RF's are dire.
Im actually quite amazed BMW have the neck to keep punting these out as a viable alternative to a spare.

No - the sensor works on the ABS sensor.
It monitors the rolling diameter. If your tyre is 2bar, then drops to 1bar (1 bar being the approximate loss before the warning is pinged) the rolling diameter becomes less.
If you swop tyres, ensure the pressure is the same then no fault will be displayed.

Thanks for the reply, will pass the information on.
When changing tyres regardless of types does it throw up a fault code with the tyre pressure sensors as in they think that the tyre has lost pressure? Was told they did and needed to be re-set at bmw?
You should be able to reset the sensors without taking it back to BMW, otherwise you'd have to go back every time you had a new tyre fitted. It'll be in the manual how to do it.

Run flats are terrible tyres, changing to anything will be an upgrade! He wants to know will changing to non run flats help the ride quality enough to justify the cost and are there any issues with the tyre pressure system when changing tyre types?
Had them on a 328i Tourer when I bought it, the difference between them and the Michellin PS2s I fitted transformed the car from a skidding boneshaker into a smooth well handling car..

I had them on my 330d M sport - awful, hard, no grip in wet etc.
Imagine filling go flat tyres with cement and you might get an idea of how bad they are.
I have run flats on my 2005 525 sport and along with the ride (hard), they are also very sensitive to inflation pressures, even a minor decrease has a very noticeable effect on the car as it tram lines all over the place especially on Britains A & B roads which does become tiresome on a long journey. The only reason I don't change them is that my wife uses it daily to commute to her job and I couldn't see her changing a wheel by the side of a country road.

RAC and AA etc will toe your car if you have a flat and dont have a spare. No women change a wheel these days anyway. The AA and RAC will also change a wheel for a woman if she has one in the car.Gassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
