I'm presuming E46 here?
Mine is disabled, no problems with it and pulls better at lower revs. Basically removed vacuum pipe and plugged it.
On the newer 204bhp(6sp) totally disabling it will put the engine management light on, flow can be partially cut off though will no ill effects.
