Trying to help a neighbour replace their car and looking at the option of a '07 BMW 520d. The car is up for sale locally at £7k - does this seem about right? It has covered 158,000 miles with F.D.S.H. What problems are their to look for at this kind of mileage, or is it best to just leave it?

Does anyone have any experience of the servicing costs and M.P.G.? Is the 520d a decent engine itself - I'm thinking that paying a the premium for maybe a 525d or 530d might be a better bet. That said on paper at least the 520 stacks up well for a car of this size with a good mix of power and economy.

Other alternatives are typical Vauxhall's, Honda's etc, yet the fact the BMW has high mileage means it is in budget. Looking to keep for 3-4 years covering aprox. 15k each year.

Thank you in anticipation

The E60 facelift came out with the 07plate. However, the 520d was 'facelifted' in the September - around the 57 mark - I'm sure someone else will fill in the blanks.

I've a facelift 3litre diesel and I am very impressed with my motor for what that's worth.

As for the mileage I don't know. However, full dealer history is great. You can also ring some £1 a minute BMW helpline to give you dealer history on the motor-that should help you understand what work has been done to it.

I'd suggest you check the service manual to ensure that all the work has been done as per the schedule.

the 520 was facelifted from a build date of 28th March (or thereabouts) onwards - first cars probably registered in the UK towards the end of april. BUT that would have been with the 'old' 163BHP engine and the old auto box (if one was fitted). The newer 177BHP model came out late september 07, with the joystick style box offered as an option from then onwards.

There's a good chance it's been sat on the motorway all day and it will be in very decent condition.

My brother has a 2008 model on about 130k. You could probably knock ~100k off the odo and it would be believable. It handles the mileage very well.

Only just had its first set of front pads too!!
