Tyres for a MY 2005 545 M Sport
Discussion
Hi
I would like some advice in the best tyres for my 545 M sport (55 Plate)
It has the 19" M double spoke Alloys and currently Uniroyal rain sport tyres. I have a universal alloy spare wheel so guess no intended to have run flats !!
What is the standard BMW tyre for this car and does anyone have any suggestions of a trye that is better than the one BMW fit as standard ??
Many thanks
Mike

Hiya
Question is too vague!
Best? do you mean by performance? price? longetivity? grip? wet weather performance? .....
There's lots of different brands out there and tyres to suit various criteria.. read up all the myriad of 'which tyre' posts, evaluate against the criteria important to you, and make a shortlist from which you can make a decision!
Right now you'll get every answer under the sun.. 'michelin are best' and 'good year are best' .....
cheers, Dennis!

Thanks for your reply. I guess i was mainly trying to find out what BMW fit as standard from factory as they must have chosen the tyre that is best suited for the car and its performance.
I am not very impressed with the Uniroyals !! If it were not for DSC i would have found myself in many a predicament !!!
Was just gonna put back on it what BMW fit at factory next time, unless people say that they are bad and have experience of a far better alternative.
I drive it quite hard so need rubber that works (grips well) in all conditions, wear and cost is a secondary consideration.
Hope this clarifies things

Hiya
Yes, I know what you're trying to say!
You could find out what BMW put on the car by ringing up a dealership to ask them! however, I think BMW will use several brands at any time to fit to their cars depending on stock levels, territories, any country level agreements or restrictions etc, so what might've been fitted in the UK is different from the exact same car in France or Italy or Germany etc.
There's many a thread about tyres, you'll need to trawl them to see what other's have thought about their grip levels from various brands etc and evaluate and create a shortlist from there.
For me, I wanted a respected brand but with longetivity a primary requirement. I've thus gone for Federal S595's which currently have around 5/6mm of tread and I've over 20,000 miles on them. I've been totally happy with grip levels and I have a re-mapped E39 530d Touring. I think the 'grippier' the tyres the softer the compound and thus will probably wear relatively quickly.
Cheers, Dennis!

I have 452's on my 550 currently and I agree for the money they are good, they are however not in the same league as Pilot sports but then neither is the price. Personally after doing a Porker day on Pilot sports I'm going to upgrade to these when I change my 19" Spiders for something wider.
Hi, standard factory fitment for M sport with 19" wheels are Continental Sport Contact 2 in 275/30/19 96y (rear) and 245/35/19 (front) The rears have lasted me around 18000 per set so far over a few sets. Was looking to try the new Continental 5p next as Sport contact 2's are an old design of tyre.
I had Falcon tyres on my 19" 535D alloys and whilst they are good tyres for the money, be careful with the rears as they do not sit proud of the alloy wheel and leave the rim more exposed than others, asking for a good kerbing!
I also found they were quite slippery for a 1000 or so miles which was slightly unnerving at times.

Hohoho - I'm sorry, no wheel asks for a kerbing. If kerbing occures, It's purely down to operator error
Trouble with 'which tyre' questions is you'll get all the answers, I have had excellent results with my Federals, another guy who has a track day E28 M5 has also had excellent experience with them, yet when you ask others, they say oh they're terrible and not so good etc.
A few years back, I remember having some michelins, and they aquaplaned on me even with very good tread, so I'm kind of now not liking Michelins. I had a fantastic experience with Good Year Eagle F1's on my previous E34 525i Sport, so love those. . Falkens are mentioned alot, and again, most people report good expeeriences and others say no way.
If you analyse the independant reviews often seen in Autocar etc, you can look at those results and evaluate what suits you as you'll still get many answers here online unless you opt for the very best and reported tyres.
Cheers, Dennis!

Totally agree Dennis - however, we have all been a bit close to a kerb on occasion and with no outer rubbing strip, the alloys are more likely to get scuffed rather than the rubber bruised!
Good tyres for the money - too slim for me

Thanks guys !!
I guess a lot of this tyre choice thing will come down to personal preference !!
I just thought that the uk original tyre of choice by BMW uk should be the right tyre to fit.
Will have to read up on some independant tyre reviews then make my choice.
Just needs to be said that Uniroyal rain sports are very poor on damp tarmac !! Trust me they have let me down many many times, now have no faith in them plus again no rubbing strip so the kurb monster can get an easy meal !!
Thanks
Mike

The Uniroyals were new in December 2009 so done a years driving and nearly 10,000 miles still got plenty of tread on them.
They are ok in the dry and in the very wet but leathal on damp tarmac.
I have to say my 545 sport is a pretty lively thing so it could be partly down to my right foot but the old tyres were better when very worn. (cant remember what they were !)
Cheers
