Z3's and E36's - Safety?

Alright guys, out of interest how do the older E36 based cars fare in crashes etc.? I've toyed with the idea of an S50 Z3M (bargains at the minute) but am a bit put off by the safety aspect, especially with the Mrs. driving my motor occasionally! Probably need to keep saving for something with TC

My Mum had quite a serious head on accident in her Z3 2.8 a few years ago and the car provided what I considered a decent amount of protection. She actually replaced it with a Z4 and I would say (and she does too) that the Z3 was far better built!
