E46 flaps v engine
Discussion
'04 E46 Compact 320td Sport, trade value before I tried to drive to work this morning ~£3.5k, end of street nasty rattle and engine cut out, very swift service by Green Flag (recover plus), by lunch time £220 bill expected for breather valve replacement/flush and oil change (sigh of relief I thought it sounded terminal), by 5pm it's worth £500 in part apparently when worked out swirl flap HAS gone and eaten valve...oh that's £500 as parts minus the £220 work
oh that's at ~69k with full BMW "service" history, what a crock of
so be warned get your flaps done

Sorry to hear that.
I've had my '04 E46 320d saloon for just over 18 months and only recently discovered this problem. I thought being one of the later cars it might not be affected by this issue but obviously not!
I thought the repairs were supposed to be in the region of £2-£2.5k, although the amount you quoted is obviously an inconvenience.
This is the one niggling issue that I don't even have that makes me want to get rid of my car.

It's a fairly inexpensive fix to remove them.I've had my '04 E46 320d saloon for just over 18 months and only recently discovered this problem. I thought being one of the later cars it might not be affected by this issue but obviously not!

I had mine repaired for under £1k (not including the new turbo I haven't bought for it yet), the damage was pretty localised to one cylinder so I got away with replacing a single piston. There were other bits and pieces too like getting the head resurfaced and some new valve seats cut in but it wasn't major.

Plus of course the cost of the swirl flap blanks.
How much is a replacement engine ? From fab direct etc?
If everything else is OK on the car, it may be worth doing that instead?

I think he's saying his car is now worth £500 in bits, not that the repairs are £500Gassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
