I am the proud owner of an E36 328i Sport, a car that I have thoroughly enjoyed over the past 3 years.

The car is currently sitting at around 91k miles and has 2 green lights on the dash at the moment. It's going to be due an Inspection II within the next couple of months. To tie in with this there is a bit of work I would like to carry out.

It probably deserves as refresh of the suspension - there are a few knocks and the work would tighten up the car.

Bodywork wise, the front and certainly rear bumpers would benefit from a respray and the BBS RCs are suffering laquer peel, i'd like to get them polished to return them to their former glory.

Mechanically, the car is sound.

I am tossing up the idea of getting the car serviced, then getting shot and getting an E36 M3 - these seem phenominal value at the moment and my only complaint about my sport is the lack of power.

What would you do?

I could allocate about £1000 to do all of the above work or sell up and put considerably more cash towards an M car. The E36 M3 is an itch i'd really like to scrach...

Personally I'd rather buy a car in need of a service then get it done myself - my choice of garage, my choice of additional / remedial work.

So my advice is try to sell as is.

I also run a 328i. I understand an M3 is a lot more to run. Brake components for example are almost twice as expensive, and I believe they run on super unleaded. Hence why good 328s are in demand!

If you can afford an M3, its a no brainer. However you will have to spend alot to get an M3 in similar condition to your 328!

O/T whats the spec on your 328... mines upsetting me and i'd be tempted to jump ship to a younger one.

Seriously, running an M3 and keeping it in top shape is a real wallet killer sometimes, i have spent the best part of £2 - 2.5k in the last year just doing some refresh work, i now have an inspection 2 next week at a minimum cost of £500.
the parts which are specifically 'M' rather than generic 3 series are BMW's licence to print money.
Saying that though, they really are rather good at what they do.

What's it doing to upset you?

E36 M3s aren't worth keeping in "top condition" any more. Run it til it gets a bit ropey then sell it on.

OP - sell your 328i as-is. You certainly wouldn't recoup £1k of service costs.
