Discussion
Following on from this topic I'm interested to know peoples experiences with DMS'd (or other) 335i's (not diesels). There seems to be a consensus that 335s are a bit dull in comparison to e46 M3s, but if you frequent the climate threads you'll know the value of consensus opinion.
So lets have your stories!

I'd be interested in this as well.
Trying to weigh up the 335i v the 330i. Finding manual examples of either to test drive is proving difficult. The 330i seems to offer most of the performance for less money (So a newer car for the budget) with considerable economy improvements, but the 335i is 'the best' and the most powerful.
Hmmm.

Yes a bit dull, power delivery all in the middle and not much extra at the top so not much point revving it compared to the E46 M3. No M diff and run flat tyres, more a cruiser IMO. Guess the remap might help with the top end power but not going to feel like an event to drive, precise well weighted controls and taught reactions of the M3. Doing 30mph through town the M3 still feels special, the 335 could be a 320 (remapped or not).So lets have your stories!

Oddly enough, I seem to be coming across more 335s at lower prices than 330s. Both are a relative performance bargain though.
Spec for spec though they are more expensive. Most of the cheaper 335 M Sport's are the lower spec and 07 £445 tax variants. Whereas the 330i M Sports for similar money tend to be newer and or better specified.Having seen postive reviews of the Alpina B3S and Hartge modified 335i I plan to fit my E92 with a higher spec intercooler, 3" headers, custom remap and Quaife LSD later this year. I'll have to sell my M3 EVO to finance this and my dilema is that unless I put some decent coilovers ( KW maybe ) and better brakes on the 335, I have a nagging suspicion my E36 is already a better car than the 335i is going to be.

The standard 335i is a very good car but the 'soft' throttle map and N54 engine's power delivery conspire against it feeling special IMHO. The following power & torque curves show the engine's pros and cons well.
http://www.1addicts.com/forums/attachment.php?atta...
The standard engine is much stronger than BMW specify but there's little point extending it above 5K~5.5K really; anyone used to a good NA engine is probably going to find it lacking drama & excitement higher up. The mapped version makes huge torque in the low to mid ranges but the tail off higher up the rev range is still there. Improved engine breathing is needed to keep things 'on the boil' until 7K ~ cue larger diameter exhaust manifolds & free flowing exhaust etc etc.
Exhaust changes probably won't do too much for peak power but should help the top end of the power curve with the added bonus of making the whole 335i experience sound a little less neutered.
WARNING ~ the lack of mechanical sympathy in the following clip may cause distress.

A mate has DMS chipped 335i and he had it dynoed a few weeks ago at 335bhp (it was a hub dyno) he was pretty disapointed but its a still a quick car.
dissapointed?why? 335whp is about 390-400 fly.
not a shabby figure at all!!
This is interesting!! i have 16k burning a hole and i test drove one of these 335i, got to say i liked it, a little bland but dam quick, as in every day usable quick!
im in a rea dilema!! do i get one of these or is there something better for daily use, trips to europe ( italy, the Ring etc ), im not a fan of the previous model m3 so thats out for me.....
maybe this is a different thread?!
thanks

Correct, it was mine and 335.8 HP at Flywheel and just under 400 FtLb...disappointing as not what expected however not running on super unleaded could have a lot to do with it apparently and been offered to have it re-mapped in Leeds, bespoke to car so it it ever gets out of the garage then I'll book it in (4 weeks today sat at dealers waiting for a replacement alloy from Germany!)
Strange, the power figure does seem a bit low post-remap (especially as the twin-turbo is rumoured to make more than the quoted 306 bhp even in standard tune) but the torque figure seems pretty healthy at 400 lb/ft! Anyway, hope both are soon resolved to your satisfaction!Gassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
