Not had our Z4 long. 2004 2.2. Came to open the hood and it wont open. The motor is heard at first, but doesnt open, even though it uncouples and is ready to lower. Thats all it does. Uncouples, then the motor stops. Any ideas?

Check that the handles in the boot that lift the hood base to give you more boot space are not turned up - if they are then that will be the reason

Press the raise roof button to fully engage the roof closed. Wait to hear the bar close (sliding noise). Then try to relower. It could be the mechanism is slightly out of sinc. I had this once on my Z4.

It does uncouple. I've checked the 3 fuses...they are ok. How many motors are there? Also, heard bad stories of the 'pump' being waterlogged. If so, how much?

roof motor shagged. new one circa £300 and 3 hours labour. BMW quote £800-1100 for repair.

I've fixed mine myself, if your in SW I can help.

They get slower and slower until they stop.
Crap design as the motor slowly dies in its own little watery grave.
Plenty of guides on DIY on Z4 forum, taking the roof off is the time consuming bit.

Does the telltale light flash red once the hood stops? The tray which increases bootspace has a microswitch in the centre on the back of the bulkhead behind the seats.

If this gets knocked out of position, the roof thinks the tray is UP when it is DOWN and stops the roof folding.

More info on this on the z4forum as previously said.

Had two Z4 and never had any issues with the roof but both were under 4 years at the oldest. Roof motor is a possibility but check this one first as it's a cheap or free fix.

Have you tried to give the header a gentle hand? - I find that if my roof has not been dropped for a while, you may need to put a little upward pressure on it so that it totally disengages from the windscreen. Don't force it though. When it is open, a squirt of WD40 (or better still, some quality aerosol bicycle chain lubricant) on the latches saves the situation from re-occuring till the next wet season.
