Has this happened to anyone else?

Yesterday a head popped round the door and asked if anyone owned a blue BMW because it was 'smoking'. I went outside and my car had smoke pouring out from under the bonnet, I had parked it about half an hour previously. I opened the bonnet and the alarm was glowing red and the plastic casing and wires were melting so I disconnected the battery and it stopped.

I was booked in for a service today so the guy told me to leave the keys with him and he would come and get it in the morning. I got a call from him this morning saying he couldn't get it going (maybe flat battery, he's gone to get some equipment to start it), and that it has made a real mess of the wiring. He said he was worried that power has gone up the k-bus(?) wire and could have ruined the computers. I think he's basically going to spend today trying to sort it - originally I'd wanted an inspection 2 service and a water pump change!

Does anyone know why/how this has happened and what the outcome might be? I've only had the car a month and am absolutely gutted because mechanically it is in fantastic condition. Initially I was glad it was only an electrical problem but now I'm thinking this might be worse than engine trouble... Nightmare

Is it the factory alarm, or an aftermarket?

If aftermarket, does it act as an immobiliser too?

IMO I would not start replacing anything until a decent auto electrician has gone through all the wiring and seen exactly what's failed.
