2007 x5 screen problem / park brake
Discussion
recently the main display screen has failed to load when starting the car... it retains the BMW logo, often for the whole journey. Sometimes it goes blank and then returns to the BMW logo. Sometimes it displays as it should.
any ideas? software or hardware?
also, had a problem with the elec park brake that's not clearing - have not had it diagnosed yet. anyone had failed park brakes? likely fault?
thanks
ps -- car has under 30k miles!!!

I had a problem with an 07 X5 parking brake. It seized in the "on" position, so couldn't move the car. Thankfully there is a release mechanism in the boot which got me going. I left into a (crap) mechanic who said brakes had seized and needed replaced. Then left it to a BMW mechanic (doing a homer) who said replace the pads then need to reset using a special tool which he didn't have. Took it to a third mechanic who tells me there is a known fault with these and may need an actuator (think that's what he said), cost approx £500!
Sometimes my screen is slow to return to normal as wel. Normally hitting the menu button takes it back

I had some problems with my iDrive in my 2007 X5.....it kept re-booting at random times. Took it in to be checked by the dealer and needed something replacing (I forget exactly what). If your car is still under warranty I would get a dealer to look at it. They're bloody complicated cars! I'd never run one without a warranty.
thanks...
yes - I had the same problem with a previous X6, so managed to release the brake with the tool provided. The code then cleared when reset. However, on the X5, the code is not clearing and is a constantly present, so most likely something like the actuator as you mention.
What's annoying is that my years of bmw ownership, I've never once had a handbrake problem; only the occasional adjustment to the cable etc. Now they've all gone fly-by-wire, it's going to cost hundreds to fix! Hardly progress.
Similarly with the main CCC unit (that controls the central display, sat nav etc). Having done some more reading on the subject, it appears this is a well-known problem, with many failing - so I will be taking this up with the dealer.
Also, in the last 5k miles, I've had:
1) to replace both dip-beam bulbs
2) leaking of the washer fluid into the driver's footwell
3) a freak 'overnight' shattering of the real screen
