Gentlemen & Ladies,

It's time soon for me to be changing tyres on my m sport, currently have bridgestone potenza runflats oem ones i believe, which i find are quite adequate contrary to most peoples opinions, but i'm just hoping that you people could maybe point me in the direction of alternative options.

I've considered non run flats as of price differances and so i hear better handling, i'm thinking brands such as:

> Pirelli
> Bridgestone
> Michelin
> Toyo's
> Continental

Open to any other options, note: quality becomes before price... but not stupid prices... wink

Thanks in advance,

Ben smile

I'd be interested in any feedback on this too. Doing a quick search the most popular recommendation for replacement of runflats seems to be Falken FK-452 which are pretty cheap!

Falken FK452 are great.
Had them on my Alpina (265/30 x 19)
Half the price of Micheline Pilot sports, but I rate them as better than the Michelins.
Especially in the wet.

I too recently replaced my fun flats and kept the original Bridgestone rft brand.

They cost bleedin fortune but the last set lasted 47,000 miles. I was happy to stay with the same if i was going to get another 47,000.

Just a passing comment about moving away from fun flats. I rang priviledge insurance who i was with at the time and they said noooooo you shouldn't do it as it deviates from the manufacturers specification and you may invalidate your policy! Check first.

I also thought that the suspension was designed for use with run flats??

Ive just replaced my Bridgestone Potenza's RFT's, the rears lasted 28,000 and i was perfectly happy with them.

Yes they are bloody expensive to replace, but the handling has improved greatly and they are great in the wet. I dont find the ride that bad and i dont ever want to skimp with crap tyres like i used to years ago.

I have the Michelin RFT's on my E91 330 MSport. Contrary to received wisdom I think they are OK. Has to be said they are a bit of a filling loosener on rough surfaces, but they don't tramline and they stick like st to a blanket. Wet or dry. I'd have them again. Which wil be a decision in a couple of thousand miles.

I've got Potenzas on mine. They're my only real criticism of the car.

They're rock solid and tram line.

So when the time comes I was considering some Falkens. Not so much to save money but to improve the ride.

So - I was going to get a plug in pump and some tyre mousse type stuff.

Good plan, or am I missing something obvious?

That's not a good option, in my experience.
In fact, utterly useless in some scenarios.
If you're going to come off RFT's, consider the BMW jack and spacesaver kit instead.

Well guys,

It certainly seems as though Falkens are a good choice, i just don't want to have them done and be feeling that i need to change them shortly afterwards.

If anyone else has any input it would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers guys! wink

What do you mean by this?
Do you mean you think they'll wear out quick?
I didn't see any evidence to suggest that.
Or do you mean you might regret fitting them?
Again, I doubt that.

Well i was thinking i might regret fitting falcons in particular, as i dont know exactly loads about this company.

Any people who have had them and can rate them?? And without sounding a snob (i'm far from it) they don't seem as prestige as Michelin or Dunlop or Pirelli.. perhaps in barking up the wrong tree on this one guys...

I've got Falken 452's on my SLK. Perfectly happy with them. Good grip wet and dry, and they aren't noisy. Yes, it's true they aren't considered a premium brand, but that's OK, it means you get top quality tyres for less money.

Thankyou,

Now that's the kinda answer i wanted to hear.... i guess its the same old syndrome of you think of a particular name for quality and you pretty much disregard any other new manufacturer. But i like the idea of cheap good quality tyres...

I have a z4 with 18" bridgestone potenza re050 runflats, they are quite hard and do tramline quite bad on some surfaces.
When I need some new tyres I think I'll stick with potenza re050's but not the runflats, better ride and about £100 cheaper per tyre.

@ Benny Favier.
I stated in an earlier post that I had Falken FK452 on my Alpina D3.
Excellent tyres.
In no way inferior to the much more expensive Michelin Pilot Sports they replaced.
I'd have them again in a shot.

Might be only a quick search but I couldn't find and E90 space savers on the Bay.

Does an E46 one do the job or am I missing something?

I'm bullishly planning to put Falken 452's on mine when they're worn. £800 odd for 4 tyres isn't cricket..rolleyes

I had 4 sets of FK452s and thought they were great, no complaints at all, however they were always replacing run flats.

I then went from some Michelin Pilot Sport 2s to a set of FK452s and the difference was not subtle, they were far harder and so, so much noisier, my wife thought I had put run flats back on the car, I took them off after 3000 miles I hated them that much.

If you want to save some money try some Kumho KU31's, had them on a set of 18" wheels I bought for my M3 to use as track wheels and they were awesome, quiet, comfy and gripped well. If I hadn't already bought the PS2s I would have kept them.

A mate has just bought a set of the Falken 912's, he also found the 452s far too hard and noisy, but has been assured that these are more comfy and a hell of a lot quieter, so will be interested to hear what he thinks. The 912 is an asymmetrical tyre like the PS2, PS3, Conti Sport Contacts, Eagle F1 asymmetrical etc. etc. which gives a much more progressive feel so hoping he likes them.

Replaced my hateful Bridgestone RFTs with Conti Sport Contact 3 non RFTs - the car us an E91 335d. Utterly brilliant tyres and particularly effective in wet conditions. Highly recommend.

The FK452 did fail an EC drive-by noise test, so it was always going to be replaced.
I would assume the 912 is the quieter replacement.

Strangely, I didn't find any increase in noise from Michelin pilot Sport to FK452.
And I found the FK452 softer.
This was in 265/30 x 19 sizes.

Just shows you, tyres are very subjective.
What is less subjective is the massive price saving FK452s offered me.
Almost half the price of the Michelins.
And they are absolutely not half the tyre!

I don't find the 452's noisy either - I too replaced Pilot Sports with the Falkens and I'm well chuffed. I'm quite sensitive to tyre noise in the SLK, as noisy tyres are a real pain with the roof down.

Performance (grip) wise, I haven't noticed a difference either - although to be fair the SLK isn't exactly a sports car. And I am not The Stig!
