BMW engine number?

Morning everyone, I'm having a clear out today and found my friends old engine he removed from a 2001ish BMW 525i. I wish to sell it but I do not know if it's a M52 or M54 as I'm not 100% sure on the model year. How do I find out? Also is the sump different from auto's/ manuals and is it the same as the 3 series, 7 series?

It is an M54 - all 525i's in the E39 had an M54.

Unless it's actually a 523i, in which case its an M52. But if you are certain its a 525i then it is an M54.

2001 525i should be an M54.

Yh I wasn't 100% sure on the model or year. Can I tell from engine covers, manifolds or loom, engine number etc?

Is it a facelift car with Angel Eyes and CELIS rear LED's?

If so, it has an M54.

Have a look on the back of the car. It will say either 523i or 525i in big shiny numbers.

The cars long gone. Its been in my garage for years! Can BMW match up an engine number?

Lol - I love the fact you were having a clear up and just "found" an engine. Can you post a pic up - perhaps someone will then be able to tell you?
