Just a theoretical question. If you had a 318 or similar 4 cylinder powered 3 Series e36, how easy is it to swap in a 6 cylinder engine such as a 2.8 or even an e36 M3 motor?

Is it a lot more work than starting out with a 6 cylinder engine like a 320/323 and then performing the same swap.

Cheers.

You would need the engine, ECU, radiator, gearbox, prop shaft, drive shafts, differential, brakes (discs and calipers), suspension, wheels (if you don't have 17" wheels already)and exhaust for a start.

By the time you've added all that up and then taken into account the additional cost of insurance for a modified car, you'd be better off buying a 328i or M3 instead from the start.

Was wondering how easy, as in no or few custom parts would be needed to do such a swap on a 316ti.

Probably a little more up your street so sorry for the slight change in topic but there an increasing amount of people squeezing LS lumps under the bonnet of E36 BMWs.

I'm not sure it'd be cheap by any stretch of the imagination but it would certainly be fun!

Cheers.

Not really thinking if a V8 though. It was purely hypothetical. I presume a 323ti would be an easy swap with other S6 e36 engines. But as we only got the 316/318ti I just wondered how much of a bolt in exercise it would be if you wanted to build a lightweight track car.

Ah gotcha. smile

I'm 90% certain that there was a build thread where someone coverted their 316i Compact to a 328i Compact for track use. It was in the readers car section.

We have a '95 316 compact but have never considered the option of tracking it so the logical upgrade would be an E46 325ti.

Good little cars though, despite their bad image.

Don't know if you've already seen it but this is the thread to read.

Best of luck.
