E39 530iA gearbox on the way out
Discussion
Thought this day would come one day and alas seems it is here. Running a 2000 530iA SE with 181,000.
Car went in for a service today for the full monty. It was noted that the transmission fluid has a very small leak.
On my way home I tried to engage reverse and low and behold it selected fine but would feel like the clutch was slipping. It wouldn't move off at any pace whatsoever.
This got me worried, and I went out for a spin and its changing perfectly going forward.
Is this likely to be level related (due to leak) and can I top up easily? Is it even worth checking? And if so what oil should I use?
If I do nothing what is the likelihood that it will go kaputt, and if high do people have experience of when? I can live with it as is, and would struggle to afford a 'box replacement at present due to other commitments and this weeks service!!!
Any help greatly appreciated

Cant offer any help regarding the problem, only what I've done to mine and the difference it has made on my 80k 525iA 2001
Ordered 10ltrs of Mobil/Esso LT71141 from a guy supplyig it on ebay at just over £8ltr
Check you get the right stuff fot you box though (use the part no. off the green sticker on bottom of gearbox to cross reference)

Had the box drained circa 5ltrs comes out(box hold about 9.5ltrs)of well used oil looking well past its best (easy to see with 100k+ these boxes go pop)
Change was dramatically improved (more responsive and in particular quicker to drop into a higher gear, its found a couple of mpg to!
Just had the oil dropped again to put a further 5ltrs fresh in
