Am looking to buy an X5, I've had the 4.4 and 4.6is before, but I'm wondering what a "chipped" 3 litre model is like, when I drove one a few years back it seemed a bit lacking. I'd even look at an lpg 3ltr if I thought it would have a bit of performance in it, your thoughts please.

They say that there is nothing wrong with the 3 litre its smooth but it struggles with the x5s bulk & has an impact on economy.

Not sure what a chipped one would do though & i feel my 4.8is struggles at times with the weight, the fact is performance & heavy weight dont mix.

Your probably better off with the diesel & get that remapped for loads of torque.

Happy hunting either way.

Kudos

I went form a Boxster S to a 3.0D X5. No real complaints

What sort of mpg do people get from the 3ltr diesel, was also thinking of lpg conversion, but not sure.

So not that much better than the bigger versions, and with the price of diesel surely you are worse off, ( stand to be corrected ).

The 3.0 diesels have never been renowned for fuel economy. When you mate the lump to a 2 tonne + vehicle with an auto box, things go down hill pretty quickly. I can't comment on the mpg capability of the petrol versions, but I'd be surprised if you ever averaged anything more than mid to late teens with the V8s.

If you're doing a lot of miles then I guess the diesel makes sense, but I doubt you'd halve your fuel costs over the petrol even then.

Even in the 330d (auto) I recall only ever achieving late twenties MPG on combined run.

Averaged 22.4mpg from my 3.0i over the last 25k miles.

It's reasonably quick and not too sluggish at all, but that's not to say I wouldn't want more power!!
