E39 Auto gear selection

My old E39 525 auto has developed an issue. Unable to select drive. Able to move lever from P to R to N but not D. 
I say unable, more time consuming and difficult. So far it's gone in in the end and then drives as usual until the next time I have to select drive. Then it'll be a b
h again.
From this sparse description what do you think? Just a selector/lever issue or auto box?
