BMW Value Service
Discussion
Shame to see that BMW seem to have jacked up the price of the Value Service, but only for the E39.
An Oil Service, Inspection 1 or Inspection 2 are now a staggering £50 more than the same service on the E46 - even though the only difference between the services (The cars share the same engines) is that the E39 has one extra microfilter.
A shame really, they were quite competitive. No idea why they've singled out the E39 owners for a price hike.
£179.99 for:
Work performed in this package:
Engine oil is removed and replaced with new oil
Oil filter is removed and replaced with new filter
Service interval indicator resp. Condition Based Service is reset according to factory specifications
£129.99 for the same service on a 330i!
Doesn't seem quite so value anymore.

That seems like very poor value to me
Could it be because our E39's are still plodding along and haven't all fell apart?
I'd say it's possibly due to the fact it's so successful they didn't expect the demand to be so high so to counter it up the price so that their average service goes up.

Also lots of people with older cars like the e39 BMW might be trying to get them into newer machines
I'd also suggest that they lowered the prices a few years ago due to the downturn when they sold so few cars they needed more profit from other areas in absolute £'s.
Now cars are selling again and therefore the workshop is too full of lower price jobs solution up the price a bit some will leave bonus you get more full price new cars in service while others will remain result higher average service inccome.

So why only jack prices on the E39, not the E46 as well? Now cars are selling again and therefore the workshop is too full of lower price jobs solution up the price a bit some will leave bonus you get more full price new cars in service while others will remain result higher average service inccome.
Still £319 for an E46 Inspection 2, whereas the E39 has climbed from £349 to £369..
Actually it's £339 for a 6 Cyl E46 Inspection II.
I am making the most of this 'value service' and having new discs & pads, front and rear fitted next week. I dont think £474 for all parts and fitment bad value at all.
On a side note, a mate of mine has just had new discs and pads for his 2004 996 carrera 2. £1500 for the parts, and he had to fit them himself...

Price comparison fail...E46 6 cylinder price is £149.99...it says so on the website directly above the bit you copied/pasted!
Indeed - had mine done yesterday. Adding on a hand wash and courtesy car and the oil change came to £172... still, they couldn't find anything else to sell me!ETA: hang on, it's not £149.99, it's £149 (and £179 for E39s). 99p less than I thought

£120- £180 for an oil and filter change? Looks like value to me!
Oil = £25 at Halfords, filter about £8 from BMW. Half an hour's work.
I've done it to maintain my extended warranty - seems reasonable value in that context.Oil = £25 at Halfords, filter about £8 from BMW. Half an hour's work.
Getting just the oil service done by a reputable BMW specialist would save, say, £50 in total but lose the right to a warranty. If my auto gearbox needs replacing, I will be very grateful for that little bit extra spent.
The E39 is a twice obsolete 5 Series who age spans 8-15 years. I'm discussing the cost of an oil change on such a vehicle, and there are now very few examples which still have a BMW warranty.
Given the relatively low value of your average 10 year old example (excluding M5's of course), 6 litres or so of good quality semi synthetic (25-30 pounds) when required would be the sensible way to go. But giving a BMW dealer the thick end of £70/180 to do the same thing on a £2000 car? To each his own.

I didn't realise owners of old E39's were using Castrol Edge.
Fool + Money = soon parted!
I like to think that part of the reason mine is still nice is because both myseld and its original owner didnt cut corners on maintenance to save a few quid.Fool + Money = soon parted!
Therefore I won't be using anything other than the recommend oil.

Well then he has been royally ripped off as the parts from a Porsche main dealer come in at well under a £1000. That's with all the sensors shims and other parts that you need.pp

The reason I mentioned doing it to maintain my warranty is that is exactly why I do it - a younger E39 will probably be worth quite a bit more than £2k and the comprehensive warranty can be extended until 100,000 miles, so it's not that much of a stretch.Given the relatively low value of your average 10 year old example (excluding M5's of course), 6 litres or so of good quality semi synthetic (25-30 pounds) when required would be the sensible way to go. I bet you'd be keen to buy a car with full BMW history which has been under warranty for 9 years, wouldn't you? So it's not entirely wasted on an appropriate car. Doesn't seem to be any more expensive for a 540i either, so bearing in mind the larger sump that could start to look reasonable value.

I know what you're trying to say, but I don't agree. BMW and Castrol are in bed, and they'll recommend the oil with the highest profits. Edge is probably very good but so are most brand name oils. What about my own 268'000 mile 3 litre, which gets fed on a normal 10/40 semi synth? No fancy oils there. Therefore I won't be using anything other than the recommend oil.
It's not a high revving technological masterpiece, just an old plodder. £25 worth of Halfords oil every 10'000 miles (or thereabouts) does it just fine thanks, just as it's done since 2004.
Castrol Edge is a complete waste of time in one of these, as my old shed proves. If yours is any better than mine at 268k, I might think again but somehow, I doubt it!
