Bought a 2005 x5 3L Diesel two weeks ago, I've noticed that on start up in the morning it sometimes smokes and can also give a puff when I floor it to overtake. Never had a diesel before and was wondering if this is a common sight or not. Garage I bought it from said that it got a service before I picked it up, is there any way to check? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

There is an oil breather that might do with changing.
A small puff of diesel smoke is pretty common when quickly flooring it, but you shouldn't get much at idle.

If on the cold start, it is white smoke, then it's not firing on a cylinder, and possibly a busted glowplug.

Im not saying this is your problem but its worth checking your engine breather. with the engine warmed up & idling pull the dipstick out slightly & if theres a suction (vacumn) noise then your engine breather's blocked. You can also try releasing the oil filler cap as well when its idling & if the same sucking action (vacumn) occurrs your engine breather is blocked & needs replacement. Just be careful though releasing the oil filler cap as oil can spray out if you remove the oil cap too far. You only need to release it & hold it over the filler neck.
I've come across this fault on quite a few Bmw's & if blocked it causes the pressure to build up inside the engine when running eventually pushing the oil out through the exhaust which then gives of a white smoke as its being burnt by the hot exhaust gases. plus it will eventually block & ruin your catalyst !
