Came on this morning while pootling along. Not during breaking. Turning engine off and on again gets rid of it but it came back on later.

Suspension is very hard now, so it's possible that the sensor has simply come loose (which I'll check)

But if that's not it, what's the worst that could happen? (bearing in mind this car is used 95% on track, 5% on road)

Hi
With regard to your ABS light I had similar problems when I owned a 318iS coupe. I first had a sensor that was faulty which I had to fix for the MOT. I managed to find the one that was faulty which I was very relieved. However there was a second fault, when I drove away I would do about 20yards and the light came back on and would stay on. This is an indication that the reluctor rings on the drive shafts are faulty. The teeth on the ring can choke up with crud or could even be a couple of teeth missing. The rings are not very accessable unless you strip down the drive shaft and inspect them, the front rings are on the hub.

Hope you find the fault

regards

Blimey - I hope it's not that serious. I've only recently had the rear axle apart.

Car's booked in to the garage tomorrow morning; I guess I'll know soon enough. I'm hoping it's just the new hard suspension which has shake a sensor loose.

Almost certainly an ABS sensor - a hook up to diagnostics should tell you which one and about £20 to replace - don't buy OE sensors at £80+ a throw, got mine on-line for a quarter of the price and still working perfectly 10 months later
