Hi all. I'm currently driving an E92 320D(about to be parted with) and am looking at getting something relatively cheap to enjoy over the summer for a few months before I go overseas with work.
Having had a few sporty cars previoudly and lusting after them as a kid, after a bit of deliberation I've decided to look for an E36 rag top.

I'm looking at aither 323 or 328s up to about £3k, and am just after any advice with regards to things to look for, benefits of either model etc or just any general guidance.

Thanks in advance.

great value at the momment. I have just paid £4k for a minter 80k mile 323 MSport Vert on a 99V in Avus Blue with beige/biscuit leather. I have owned four E36 Vert's previously and have loved every one. Three 328s and an M3. I much prefer getting a good one of these to a ropey chavd up E46. Look for things like standard BMW spec. original alloys, stereo, lights etc are a good indicator of thoughtful and sympathetic ownership. I always look for low total owners, service history and if buying privately a nice large suburban house rather than the local estate. All fairly obvious stuff. There are still a lot about so be choosey.

The rear wheelarches are a rust hotspot and go from the inside out, so look carefully at those where debris collects on the inner lip. The well known nikasil lineing problem before approx 01/98. It is important to try and get the later ausil engine. Somebody will be along in a minute to discuss this at length Im sure.

Regards whether a 323/328..I would say both are very similar in character..I would look for either with condition/spec/mileage more a defining factor than which model.

With the nikasil, google it and look for the Tab when you go car shopping for 328's. some will tell you if its not gone by now, it never will. Others will tell you they are a ticking timebomb! Your call.

As the other guy said, biggest killer is the rust so check and check again for it. If looked after the engiens are pretty bomb proof.
