I swapped my Wife from a 2005 730D into a 2005 535D at the beginning of the year as our puppy has grown to around 175% of the expected size...

We have had a strange intermittent fault with the glass part of the tailgate in that it seems to click open at random. (It has not got the powered tailgate)

It wasn't too bad until the past week it has been doing it more and more.

I sat in the car tonight and pressed buttons, touched stuff and tried everything I could to make it happen...then recalled that it happens mostly at slow speed or stopped.

I found that if I touch the accelerator then the brake then accelerator in quick succession I could get it to click open each time!!!

Has anyone else come across this or is our car just a strange thing??

BTW started to read the 20 pages of will a 535D remap destroy stuff and become the best/fastest car in the world, snapping knicker elastic at 5 paces and gave up after about 10 posts...it is a pretty capable estate that will go quickly in a straight line, but it is anodyne and won't dance through a series of corners like my ol' Porker can and only averages about 6 mpg better....

You might well have the dreaded E61 tailgate wiring problem or, if you're lucky, just a duff switch.

Water in switch us much more common than tailgate loom problems (thankfully).
Easiest solution if you never use the glass tailgate is to pop the cover off with a knife and pull the flexible circuit board out wiith some pliers. Problem solved.
If you want to use it buy a new micro switch and fit in 5 mins.

Thanks Phelix, i thought you were taking the mick there, but googled it anyway and see that it is a known issue, so will get it booked in to be looked at at the stealers, it is still under warranty
