Recently aquired a 1993 325 for the occasional track day. I bought an oil filter from a specialist motor store. When I gave it a service today I was a bit worried at the apparent differnce between the old and the new. The old was a genuine BMW part with metal top and bottom, with a sort of cage around it. The old was just a filter (if that makes sense).

Is this pattern part up to the job of the extreme use it's going to face?

It's a Mann filter. Just seemed to be far less substantial than the original BMW one.

It should be fine then, Mann are a decent enough make. As long as it fit's properly in the hole. It should have some with replacement O rings as well. Might not necessarily need them though.

Hang on a minute. Isn't the cage thing attached to the lid of the oil filter housing, the filter fits inside this.

At least that's how it works on my M52 IIRC.

The car is a 1993 E36 325 Coupe.

The filter he gave me was a Mann HU 926/3X

This link would suggest it's correct

http://www.fmw-tuning.de/product_info.php/info/p10... but it doesn't have the metal ends like the old one.

The old one looked like this:

The new one looks like this:

The after market bit doesn't bother me. It's the discrepancy that despite some websites saying that this is the right one, it's fundementally different from the one that was taken out.

That is generally what happens when 'you' buy non genuine parts.

ETA; the Mahle filter above is probably the same as one from BMW, whereas the MANN is a cheaper alternative, should still be fine, if your doing track days in the car you'll probably be changing the oil and filter more regularly in any case.
