Just a quick query re: oil in a 328i
Discussion
I’m about to do a service on the other halfs 328. I was looking for what grade of oil to use as it appears just about anything goes whether it be 5-30,5-40 or 10-40 . However I have started to use the 5-50 motor sport oil (Halfords own) in our other car (mx5) and have noticed it seems to burn less. Both cars use a little oil between services but the 5 hasn’t needed at top up since February.
Has anyone used this oil or at least the same grade. Any objections as to why I shouldn’t use it?

I've always used 10W40 in my M52B28's over the years. All of them have been north of 150K, one of which was over 200K. The oil (Mobil Super S, Magnatec) have always been great and there's been next to no consumption save for when I hit the track.
I'll be doing a change tomorrow with 5W40 (fully synth) as this is the preferred option for these engines. Given these are what BMW specify, I'll be sticking to them. Nevertheless, there's nothing stopping you trying it out for a few months to see how you get on. It's not that expensive to drop it out and replace it if you feel it's not doing the job.
