getting coolant around the engine before starting?
Discussion
Ive just plumbed in all the coolant hoses for my kit car. the engine is a 2008 Yamaha R1.
ive filled the expansion tank up, but the coolant only goes down to the bottom of the engine. (and the floor, and me as i forgot about the bottom air bleed hose
)
how do i go about getting it to the top of the engine and expansion tank?
or do i just start it up, and let the pump do it for me?
just don't want to risk overheating the engine before the coolant has got around.

Ok thanks, i will get her fired up. I assumed it would start overheating very quickly with no coolant.
Also why moved to biker banter?
'cos we are the font of all knowledge? Also why moved to biker banter?
BTW, boiled up my R1 BEC a number of times and they are strong as an OX...unless its an 09..in which case it'll last 15 mins and burn a hole between the bores, no matter HOW well you try and cool it.
leave the system open and keep an eye on your header.....try and find/keep a level until especially as the thermostat opens, then shut off, let it cool and repeat to check its not dropped too far.
Enjoy! watch out for the noise police!
thanks.
have been tryinng to start it for the last 30 mins, but its just spluttering and popping.
im thinking it might be old petrol? as it has 6 month old petrol, that hasnt had a proper cap on the tank(towel stuffed in the top), but have poured some fresher in the tank, and its starting to sound like it might go.
but the good news is while im doing this, its pumping the coolant around, as the expansion level is getting lower.

a squirt or 3 of quick/easy start in the airbox/filter will get the engine going.have been tryinng to start it for the last 30 mins, but its just spluttering and popping.

i have just drained the fluid, bought some new premium stuff, i was just testing that the petrol was definally coming through to the rail when what do i notice?
one of the pins had come out of the big connector for the coils Etc!!
pushed this back in, and started instantly.
well atleast its going now. although the neighbours won't agree
