Ducati Sport Classics?
Discussion
Having just read last weeks MCN, what does everybody think of Ducati’s proposed sport classics ?
Are they good bikes worthy of being put into production for connoisseurs (old farts?) to buy & polish? or a perhaps a marketing exercise in which they charge inflated prices to yuppies/poseurs/born-again-bikers for old-fashioned bikes whilst conveniently getting rid of all the old & odd parts left on the shelf?
I like many old bikes, particularly when they were new, (I had a 1960’s Ducati and at the time I loved it - but wouldn't want to ride it now!). In the past I have lusted over many bikes that I couldn’t afford (Jota – anyone) but to me an old bike is, well an old bike & if you must have one have a proper old one & not a new ‘old’ one.
If, as they claim, the sport classics go & handle like modern bikes then why not just sell modern bikes?…is it because they can’t move 999’s at the same rate as it’s predecessor?
Why stop production of the 916 range to replace it with a 1970’s race rep/wanna-be/lookalike, good as it might be?
Still I suppose that in 15 or 20 years time they will probably revive the ultimate sport classic 916 and old farts like me will probably buy one
.
Is anyone here planning to buy one of the sport classics ?

Triuph have succeeded in breaking into the US market with their retro products. This may be Ducati trying to achieve the same goal as the US would be great business for the Italian firm. More money for them to throw at their big adventure - MotoGP.
I think that you are right in saying that they may be parts bin throw-togethers, but all things considered, don't they look great! I would buy one as a second bike if I could afford it. I may have to put in some more hours at work.
