Hey chaps, have been on PH a few months now mainly in other forums but the time has come for me to get my first bike so i would like to seek a little advice if i may.

Should this summer go to plan i will have passed my bike test (only 20 years old, 125cc pass)and will be looking for a suitable bike to help me develop as a rider.

It will be restricted for 12 months to 33bhp as per the regulations but i dont fancy buying two bikes, one now and one in a years time when im more competant.

I have been looking at a Suzuki SV650s as i cant find many bad reviews about it. And it has been recommended by my local dealer but if anyone has any advice on this or other options please let me know. Obviously insurance is a killer to most out and out sports bikes.

Thanks in advance

If I was in your position and after lusting for one during my college years, I would fancy an RGV 250 in Lucky strike colours (wanna be Schwantz?). These can be restricted to 33bhp and should teach you respect about throttle control!!!

In real life terms though the SV650 is the bike at the moment. A lot of people are using this as a first bike and so they should. A great package.

Yes so i believe

The thing is that it is a twin, maybe only a small one, but the noise is tremendous especially with the twin exhaust package, removeable "trackday" baffles combo

Thanks Mate

Tell me about it. I tried riding with ear plugs in the other day and ended up binning them as I couldnt hear the Termi's properly.

A mate of mine had two of these when i was in college - the first in Lucky Strike colours. Unfortunately he wrote both of them off when cars pulled in front of him! He never bothered to get the second one restricted and as a result, lost his license after the second crash.

For what its worth - don't f**k about. Get something you want straight away - life is too short (cue lots of 'well it will be if you do that' comments) . My first bike was a 'blade & I'm still here to tell the tale.

That is advice that i like!! Nice

I really would kill for a Gixer 600, again its not the bike its the stupid premiums

the SV650 is £244 TPFT with £600 excess

the Suzuki is near on a thousand? Ludacris

i know im only 20 and its my first bike but still .... that combined with the car premium (ive got epilepsy and wrote off car because of it)would render me skint.

Apparently i can do a further test when im 21 which would mean end of restriction. I could wait 24 months and take no further tests but a funny feeling tells me i dont think that ill be waiting that long after ive got used to riding.
