I have an old book - Classic Motorcycles by Vic Willoughby, published in 1975 (ISBN 0 600 31870 2) which has a spread called 'AJS Boy Racer' (AJS 7R and variants) - full of 'techie' stuff, also a spread on AJS Porcupine (supercharged) and many other Classics, don't know if it's still available or not, but if you want I could try to scan the AJS pages for emailing.

Can't help you with the bike though!

that'd be great, I had this book (and others) but foolishly lent it and never got them back, if you can e-mail them or make a decent photocopy of the pages I'd reimburse you any costs. Mail me off-line through my "handle"
many thanks John
